'Black Focused schools'

posted 6th May
So i dont know if anyone else has heard but my city, Toronto is trying to approve funding *with the back up of the school board* to create the cities first 'black focused school'. They fight that this will help lower the 40% drop out rate amoungst black students. Others fight that it is a step back and creating segregation once more. What do you think? Studies have shown that students from other ethnic backgrounds are also dropping out at alarming rates but do you think creating a school for a specific ethnic group is the answer?
here is one of many news reports:

Sure it's fine as long as nobody pulls fit when a white focused school opens up.

I don't understand how having a black focused school would help them stay in school.

I think it will help and hurt, personally. It's a good idea, but a lot of people are going to feel they're being segregated again.

Personally I think its wrong to create schools based around race or ethnic backgrounds. Its discrimination and isnt that exactly what people were and are fighting so hard to stop? Its extrememly offensive to say you can have a school for just your ethnic group but because "John" is white he can't have a school for just whites because then its racist.

They have those in the states called "Afrocyntric" schools or some b/s like that. Personally I don't have a problem with them. If they think that it could help minorities stay in school, all the better. I'd just hate it to turn into a battle of the races when black students drop out so much more than white ones do. It's time to do something about it so that black students will get off the government's ass about how unequal their treatment in public schools are.

Yep-espescially if the school was opened because too many white kids "couldn't relate to the curriculum".

I noticed a little while ago that McDonalds, in their commercials, have the black men making fun of the white men in EVERY commercial. I sometimes think either they're raciest against white people or they're scared that a black person will accuse them of being racist or something.

this is true but there is a reason that rates of drop out and graduation rates are so low and they NEED to be focused on
