re: 'Black Focused schools'

I dont think its that bad of an idea. High school kids of any race can learn better from people who have been through what they have been through and people that they can indentify with. Whatever helps them become functioning adults is a good idea.

I agree. Just as manywhite kids drop out along with other ethnic groups but why is it one those who arent why are allowed to have a school for just them. They want to stop discrimination yet they are adding to the problem. All that is happening is they are chreating a larger discrimination toward white because they are the only ones who cant yell racist. I went through hell and back in school. My school was in what some call a"white area" yet our school got broken into and vandalized atleast once a week. The whole time they couldnt do anything about the crimes to the school because it was a mainly "white" school. When they finally shut it down and made it a private school they got everything they needed. Even a 6 foot chain link fence with security cameras. You ask me thats BS!! They had to move the entire 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade to the high school because it was too dangerous. We spent years in over crowded classrooms some sharing with the other grades in small portable buildings that belonged to the elementary school.

White students are allowed to have a school just for them - it is called the regular public school. The current system *is* the "White-focused" system. The education they get is from a Eurocentric perspective with a little multiculturalism thrown in to add a dash of spice to the rice pudding. We don't learn in public school that the ancient Greeks got most of their mathematical and philosophical ideas from the ancient Egyptians, or the impact of European colonialism in the current economic and political situations of African nations. The teachers are still predominantly white and the administrators even more so.White students already have a school all for them no matter how many Black students attend it, it's the one they already go to.

Also, Afrocentric schools, if funded with public funds, can not be exclusively for Black students - anyone with an interest in learning from that particular cultural viewpoint will be allowed to attend.

That is such bull. We were taught all about Ancient Egypt, African, Europe, China, Greeceetc. Its not "white focused" at all. We were taught all about different cultures and countries in History, Geography, "World History", classes like those. There is no excuse for discrimination whether it be against black, whites, or any other group. Its wrong no matter who it is that is doing the discriminating. The teachers are NOT predominantly white. I think I had maybe two teachers a year that were white out of 8 class periods.

I just don't see why everyone can't take adderall and go to school and just love all subjects about all ethnicities!!!LOL.
For God sakes people get over it! If you want to do anything with your life you have to go to high school and GRADUATE! Or get a GED. It's not a choice anymore you won't go anywhere unless you have schooling, and high school is nothing anymore! There is an afro-centric high school here in Columbus, Oh and I'm not sure what the stats are for the graduation rate is there, but haven't people fought for a very long time to desegregate everyone and now we are segregating again...WTF. Not everyone can be happy with everything all the time, but that is LIFE. You have to take what you are given and roll with it. Everyone has everything so catered to them they don't remember what it is like to not be happy with something or do something they don't want too...uhhh it's irritating.

Really Cowgirl? You learned about Kemetic culture in public school? You learned about the Egyptian Mysteries and how Socrates traveled to Egypt and then came back and got famous off of all the stuff he learned from the Africans? And your teachers were all black? Cool! Score one for Alaska public education! Because here, it ain't like that at all.

When I was in school, we glossed over the Fertile Crescent at the very beginning of World History but no one ever dared to say humanity *originated* in Africa. Oh sure, we learned about Tutankhamen and stuff and their strange religions and savage rituals, but that was about the extent of it. Oh we also learned that the white slave traders bought slaves from blacks that already had slaves in Africa, thus almost justifying the atrocity here. But the gist of the Africa unit was flies, famine and AIDS. We learned about the conflict between the Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda as "tribal warfare", but for some reason never learned the two groups lived in harmony until the Germans, then the Belgians came in and imposed their way of life on those people, then on the European withdrawal, the two groups turned to conflict to fill the European power structure that was left behind.

But I guess some people don't want students to have the opportunity and choice to learn in a way and from a perspective that would be interesting and relevant to them and their culture. If they can't learn from our books and our perspective then I guess they can just go ahead and drop out, ungrateful hooligans, whatever happens to them after that's on them, right?

It's not resegregation for Gods sake. Segregation was government mandated compulsory separation of the races. It was giving the used books and nasty classrooms to the black students while the white students got the newest, most up to date things. I guess there is such a thing as generational memory, because it seems like white people even today can't seem to fathom the idea of predominantly black students getting a brand new school and completely different books.

Nobody is government mandating that black students go to Afrocentric schools - it is listed as a choice, just like there are schools for students interested in vocational careers, performing arts, science and technology, teaching even core subjects from those perspectives, then what is wrong with an optional magnet school for teaching from an Afrocentric perspective? If enough students are interested in it, then make it happen!

It's a public school so if white, Latino, Asian students want to attend, nobody is going to stop them, just as no one isn't going to direct the little black boy to the Afrocentric school when he just wants to go to the regular high school where all his friends are. So cut it out with the fearmongering of "resegregation" - it's not.

It's only encouraging learning, which is never a bad thing.

Yes we did learn about that. I dont know what school you went to but obviously it was bad even compared to mine if you didnt.

Mine was considered a "white" school and we had to share books that were falling apart between 3 or 4 students at a time. No computers, no tv's,no extras, nothing. Hell our "library" if you cancall it that was in a closet. Its not "Black" area schools that have it bad its schools that are just plain IN a BAD area.

Also, NO, thats not all it encourages. It encourages discrimination which like i said is wrong no matter who its coming from.

Plain and simple if a school was based soley around the "white" culture there would be a million people lined up in protest.

We covered that in World history throughout my schooling. I went to schools in both NC and VA. It wasn't covered all in one year, but over the time span of my school career. You are complaining about how you didn't get to learn more about Africa, but we have one year of US history and government in highschool.

Since you are an adult (you = anyone), and you want to further your education, the pick up a book or go to college. Nothing is stopping these young blacks from going to the public library to borrow a book. People always expect to be handed everything, sometimes you have to work for your knowledge.

I was quite appauled that we never learned about the Chinese Holocaust of WWII. It took place in Nanjing, China. Millions of Chinese and Russians were tortured, raped, murdered, abused, ect by the Japanese. This was overshadowed by the European Holocaust. When I heard about this, I went and did my own research and did a lot of reading on the subject. (I suggest a movie called 'Men Behind the Sun' or the book 'The Rape of Nanjing'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre

White isn't a culture nor an ethnicity. It's a skin tone. There are Italians, Russians, Irish, Scottish, English (and many more to name) of 'whites' that live in this country. Did your school cover the conflicts that arose between the Italians and Irish in our country? Did you know that many Irish were fooled or forced into coming to America? I know we didn't go into detail about it. American culture shouldn't be defined by colors or nationalities. It's the history that took place in our country.

Our country was settled by English Europeans. Therefore, a lot of US's history does revolve around English heritage. The history of Africans in this country is a short and violent one. We are all taught this, so what's the point of an Afro-centric school again? I will agree to a school like this when there are ones dedcated to every single other race that resides in this country.

Moral of this story: Quit expecting handouts. If you want to learn, then go learn, but don't expect someone to teach you everything. I feel that race segregated schools like this are a slap in the face to anyone who has fought for racial equality.

We actually did cover that part in World History. My history teacher even brought in his tv from home so we could watch a movie on it. Many parts were upsetting because what people went through was terrible. Even in US History and Government we studied other countries. US History covered the connections between the US and other countires and Government covered the US way VS other countires.

You are right. Technically there is no such thing as "white" other then color. If you are considered "white" then you are of British decent. "Whites" didnt start here. They started in England and only Native American Indianas are actually FROM here by decent.
