Rape scenes TRIGGER WARNING

posted 13th Jun '12
So, I'm a major horror movie buff and I just recently watched a movie called "I Spit on Your Grave" (the original as well as the remake) and the rape scene in the original was a good fifteen minutes long.

My question to you is this: What is your take on rape scenes in movies? Are they distasteful? Are they unnecessary? Would you continue to watch a movie with a graphic rape scene? What is your opinion on violence against women in horror movies, and would you let your kid watch a movie that depicts such scenes?

This is a topic I find to be very divisive in amongst horror movie buffs so I was wondering what BG thinks.

Debate and discuss.

I think they're fine in movies. I actually don't care what is depicted in movies/tv shows/books. It's fiction. And even if it's based on a true story it doesn't bother me. I am a rape victim myself and I still see no problem with it and it doesn't make me uncomfortable when I watch it.

I've never seen either of those movies but 15 minutes seems a bit excessive :/

Im all for good sex scenes, but for rape I feel like the insinuation or very beginning would be enough

i don't have a problem with rape scenes whatsoever. if you don't like i spit on your grave then i recommend you stay away from Irreversible. my daughter won't be watching horror movies until she's a bit older period, so if the movie should have a rape scene in it i wouldn't stop her from watching the movie.

The girl with the dragon tattoo had one and I thought it was a bit much. But I loved her revenge

Smurf I love the remake, especially the part with the sheriff at the end, heh.

Anyway, I think rape is like murder, it's a fact of life and so it gets used for dramatic purposes in movies. I think if they have to actually show it on screen, it should be realistic and not whitewashed, because rape is horrible and not pretty and sanitized. It should be difficult to sit through, not easy and comfortable.

I'd let my kids watch them if there was a message there, but most of the movies I enjoy don't have messages, they're just blood spillin' limb flyin' gore fests.

i hate rape scenes. they make me so uncomfortable and i think they are unnecesary in MOST cases. i watched the movie blindeness in theaters, i had to leave during the rape scene. i was mortified. the only movie where i think the rape scene is OK is in girl with dragon tat..and the only reason i think it is OK is because she gets awesome revenge. (although i still covered my eyes in both scenes.)

Novali doesn't watch horror movies with me... she is too young. The scariest she's gotten to see is Jurassic Park.

But, I have no issues with rape scenes, murder scenes, gore, etc. If you don't like it don't watch it.

I agree. that scene made me cringe! For those of you who say you don't mind watching rape scenes in movies, maybe your outlook would be different if you were one of those women who had gotten raped in the past. I'm sure if you had, you may have a different reaction towards rape in movies. regardless if it's just a movie or not.

That was one of the best kills ever.

I agree with you.

I don't really like them and they make me uncomfortable, but then again that's also life. A LOT of women will be raped in their lifetime, so it would only make sense that it is a part of movies. It's art imitating life. It's a sad fact of life, but that's why it's in movies (any type of movies.).

So I will often not watch a movie with a rape scene in it, but I don't think they shouldn't be put there. Though, I suppose, the DO need to consider if it's needed in the movie and will it bring more or fewer watchers.

I never understood why people could just sit there and watch a very brutal graphic rape scene . . .before i watch a movie i always try to make sure that it dosent have one in it because i love to watch crime movies and thrillers but when i feel one coming on i always get up and change it or fast forward it and usually the ones i am watching it with get mad . . . i always thought it was weird?

I don't care seeing as though they're just movies, but I probably won't let my kids watch horror movies that intense until they're a lot older.

It makes me really uncomfortable to watch rape scenes. I get kinda panicky.

As far as allowing rape scenes in movies, I see no issue with that. Some movies contain are violence. Rape is just a different type of violence. I don't believe anything should be taboo when you are creating a piece of art.

As for kids seeing it. No. I believe kids need to really understand violence
before they start watching violent movies.
