Waking baby to eat?

posted 13th Jun '12
My DD was born at 36 weeks but she is now 4 weeks old do I wake her up to eat at night? she usually eats every 3 and a half to 4 hours but sometimes sleeps longer but I wake her up to eat should I just let her sleep? she was born 4 lbs 13 oz and at 2 weeks weighed 5 lbs 2 oz and she looks like she is gaining weight good by the way.

no. she will wake up when shes hungry.

some say to wake them, but its betetr to let them sleep- if she wakes up on around 4 hours anyway jsut let her sleep and get the rest she needs for growing.

Unless otherwise advised by a Dr to do so due to weight issues.

My preemie was born 7 weeks early at 4lbs 15 oz, and we spent three weeks in nicu. Our pediatrician and neonatologist strongly, strongly urged us to wake DS if it's been longer than 4 hours. This is due to the fact that preemies, even late term preemies, dehydrate VERY rapidly and burn more calories than full term babies and need constant replenishment. My pediatrician looked panicked when I said once SO and I were in a dead sleep when DS slept for five hoyrs

Let her sleep unless your doc says otherwise

My daughter was a day shy of being premature - hours actually-- but she never slept long periods (didn't sleep through the night till after she turned 1...) where I felt I had to/should wake her up

but I tried waking up my son ONCE to feed him -- trying to get more sleep.. yeah he stayed up for another 3-4 hours, so I never did that again.

Unless your doc says, I wouldn't really bother because babies wake up when they are hungry.
