They want me to pump in my car?! *D&D*

posted 13th Jun '12
This will be a post and run because I have to leave for work...
Here's the story. I work for a bank. I am currently BF'ing and pumping for my 3 month old. The bank I work at provides a private room and plenty of time to pump during the work day. I was told yesterday that in the next month I will be asked to fill in at another bank branch (located inside a grocery store) for a week. When asked where I would be able to pump I was told the issue had never come up (as no other employee there ever BF) Their solution? I was told I could either A: Breastfeed in the grocery store public restroom (GROSS) or B: Pump in my car which would be parked in the grocery store parking lot (It has been averaging 90+ degrees here... WHAT?!) I am posting the Colorado BF'ing laws and I am asking "Does this mean they need to provide a private place for me to pump?" I am freaking outraged! Thanks ladies!

Here it depends on the size of the work place and how many employees they have.

Does the mall washroom have a nursing station or family washroom?
I know most malls here have a sperate place for nursing mothers with couches and change table and play thing.

Does the manager of the store have an office with a door that you could use?

Yes they do.
It stated they have to provide a private room/area other than a bathroom stall.

Colorado State Law
An employer shall make reasonable efforts to provide a room or other location in close proximity to the work area, other than a toilet stall, where an employee can express breast milk in privacy.
Reasonable efforts means any effort that would not impose an undue hardship on the operation of the employer’s business.
Undue hardship means any action that requires significant difficulty or expense when considered in relation to factors such as the size of the business, the financial resources of the business, or the nature and structure of its operation, including consideration of the special circumstances of public safety.
Federal Law
The location provided must be “a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public, which may be used by an employee to express breast milk.

You should print it out and take it with you for proof

They should. The law clearly shows that they have to provide a place other than a bathroom, or a place that is hidden from coworkers/public view. A car doesn't fit those guidelines. Do they have a break room? I know grocery banks are tiny, so they may just not have a back room for you to do it in.

It's a grocery store, and no. It's a filthy, disgusting public restroom. Think Walmart bathroom.   And this company has near 1,000 employees.

They do have a "breakroom" of sorts, but the vault is located in the same room. Not too mention there is a camera in there.

Yes, that means they have to provide you with a private place other than the bathroom. There is no reason why an office can't be given up for 15 mins while you pump. I'd raise hell.

The manager of the grocery store? Maybe. However they aren't affiliated with the bank what so ever.

Hmm. Could you use an office? I'd definitely be printing that paper off and telling them that the law states no bathrooms, and to have the ability to pump in private.

Print that out and hand it to them, if they refuse, report it. Its state and federal law. They could get into a lot of trouble

But the bank is IN the store.

I say if the bank can't provide you a place, then the next step would be for the store to provide a place.
Good Luck
