Asperger's

posted 12th Jun '12
Who has a child diagnosed with it?

I have so many questions, I think our son has Asperger's, but I would like to talk to someone who has already been through this..

TIA.

Do you know what the signs of it were, in him? Like, what caused your parents to have him evaluated?

If you know, what were the signs noticed in him, that caused concern originally?

My cousin (now 6) was diagnosed as mild aspergers at 3 or 4.
Minimal eye contact and repetitive behavior. Awkward social skills.. that's all I can think of. Nothing too noticeable.

With my cousin. . When he was little, it would be very difficult most of the time to get his attention. You could say his name a hundred times and he would remain totally absorbed whatever he was doing, like watchinh tv. Hr didn't talk til after 3. Always walked on tip toes. He has always been emotionally immature.

It was clear from very early on that he was different.

Originally it was the fact he had sunset eyes. (he looked surprised all the time) he also didn't talk until after I was born (three years older than me) and some behavioral stuff going beyond normal tantrums

Also, late walking and talking, severe tantrums, arm flapping when he got excited.

We have a behavioral specialist telling us our 6 year old might have aspergers as well, so I'm watching. His signs are not understanding social cues, severe temper tantrums... He has been diagnosed with ADD but now it's being reconsidered.

Our son will be 5 in a month. He gets obsessive and repetitive, he has to "set" things up over and over again, and is very rigid with things at times. He flaps, constantly. It just concerns me. There's more, too.

I have a 6 year old that I'm going to be taking in for another evaluation, and hopefully diagnosis, this summer. I've been suspecting Asperger's. Everything in this thread sounds just like him.

He is very awkward socially. He has this repetitive behavior that looks the same every time he does it where he waves his one hand over the other and squints at it. He has sensory issues. He qualified for early intervention at 2 and got PT, OT, speech, and someone to work on social skills with him. Currently he gets a lot less therapy then he used to but still qualifies. He gets overloaded and has temper tantrums often. He's also very smart. Some people try to tell me it's all a parenting and behavior issue. Sigh.

I forgot to add that he also has absolutely no concept of danger.
