no ultrasound until 20 weeks??? WHAT?!

my midwife won't let me get an ultrasound until 20 weeks! and i still haven't heard the heartbeat! i am a uber-fatalist too and a worrywart on top of it all so i wish i could have some sort of sign that everything is ok in there and that this isn't just a dream! aaaaaaaaaaargh. 

I didn't get my first u/s until 20 weeks.

I think we heard the heartbeat the first time at 14 weeks.

With my oldest two I had to wait till 20 weeks for the u/s. With my youngest we heard the heartbeat at 22 weeks but had u/s every visit from teh begining.

my doctor wouldnt do an ultrasound until 18 weeks, and that was also the only one I got. Most people will not do more than one ultrasound unless there is a reason, but that's mostly up to your insurance company too. And they didnt start checking for the heartbeat until 13 weeks with me.

I didn't get my first ultraound until.....Monday. hehe. and I heard the heartbeat at around 12 weeks.

I got my first u/s at 9 weeks only bc I was bleeding a little. I also got to hear the heartbeat at that time. They gave mea scheduled u/s at 13 weeks and another at 21 weeks. Most midwifes wont do one all the time unless something is not normal. A lot of doctors will do them at every appointment but others will do it less frequently. It depends on who you go to

Same here, first one was 10 weeks to verify due date and all that good stuff, then I got another at 18 weeks and then another at 22 because he was hiding his face and they needed to see his lips or something.

I got my first one at 6 1/2 weeks just to verify everything as well.
I know it has to be hard for you to wait that long.

I got my first at 11 weeks, getting one at about 20 (just under) and I willget one again at 30 weeks as well... It doesn't seem uncommon, I have a friend and her sister is prego, due like 4 days after me and she still hasn't gotten her first, and I had another friend that didn't get hers until 25 weeks, and that was when she found out she was having twins.. AHH.. I would have appreciated more time to deal with that   BUt good luck, I would ask about the heartbeat though, I didn't get to hear mine until last appt, which was 16 weeks, but I would ask at next appt. if she doesn't just do it, and tell her you want it done!

i am in the same boat as you. My doctor let us hear the heartbeat at my first appointment (15 weeks). And told me that I would not be able to have my ultrasound until at least 20 weeks. I wish it was sooner!!

i got my first one at week 14 or so. and heard the heart beat at like 17? or 18? tell her you are having bleeding or something. i let my doctor know that and she gave me an ultrasound right away! lol. i really was bleeding but maybe it will work for you!

im guessing with your use of the word u are in britain?? how comes u aren't getting a 12 weeks scan hun??

nope, not britain, but close: british columbia, canada! *grins*
i think maybe if i went the physician route over midwife i may have gotten the option of an earlier ultrasound...seems strange that its not a set standard of care regardless, since both physicians and midwives are fully covered under our medical plan...
