WTF is up with my belly button?

posted 11th Jun '12
The past week or so I can literally smell my belly button when I'm sitting down. It's smurfing horrible. I've never experienced something like this. Like, I take a shower every day and clean my belly button because I know it can get like that if you don't clean it. I know the difference between, 'oh you've been sweaty and it's your belly button' and this smurf. I was sitting here and kept smelling something, and first thing I thought to think of was my vag (lol), me and DH had sex and I fell right to sleep, but, it wasn't that. I checked my ears (they're stretched) it wasn't them and I lifted my shirt and it kind of overwhelmed me. I stuck a Q-tip in there, and it came out with a little yellow-ish scabby like stuff, and a little blood. What is this?

It is! I'm totally grossed out. It's little tender inside too. I don't know man. I don't got any smurfing health insurance.

There has gotta be a free health clinic in your area, check it out.

You could have a topical yeast infection.

Try putting some antibacterial cream on it. Or peroxide to keep it super clean. Try that and see if it helps.

Two things - since it's a little smelly, first try some antibiotic ointment. You'll know in pretty short order if it's the wrong thing, and if it is, wash it gently with some soap and water and apply some Lotrimin ointment or cream.
The first would assume that it's a minor bacterial infection. If it's not, the antibiotic ointment will cause increased burning and itching, usually within a few minutes. The Lotrimin cream is for "jock itch", which is essentially a topical yeast infection. If you have to purchase either of these, feel free to buy the store brand - they're just fine.
It is possible that you are over-cleaning your belly button, or being too rough with it. If it's yeast, it could simply be that you are eating too much sugar, which can cause these things to pop up. Or it could just be a fluke.
But I guess I wouldn't take it to the doctor just yet, since you don't have insurance.

I think maybe you're keeping it TOO clean. Playing with your belly button too much can irritate the skin because it's pretty delicate in there. My sister used to play with hers and it got infected, smelly and weepy. If it's weeping at all I'd suggest some antibacterial powder. They should have it in the first aid section of the pharmacy. If it's not then maybe just a topical ointment for yeast infections should be fine. When I wash mine I just use water and gently swish it in with my finger and that works fine
