15 month old...is this normal

posted 10th Jun '12
Ds is 15 months old and is only saying 2 words. He says dada afew nd bubba. He used to say 3 but for some reason he went back down to only saying two words. Does this sound normal? How many words should a 15 month old typically be saying? TiA

You may want to go have his ears checked. My son at 15 months old had had so many ear infections that he started going deaf in his ears. He had started saying words and then stopped too.

my son is 18 mo and only says one word. "mama".. sometimes he doesn't even say it all.
his pedi said that by 15 he was suppose to say 3 or more..
he needs to see his pedi pretty soon and she told me that if he doesn't say more words by now he is going to be evaluated and possibly have speach therapy.

My 17mo old only says mum
I made a post a few weeks ago about this and most people just said they all develope at different times.
You could get his hearing tested?
Can he follow simple instructions? My daughter can understand simple instructions and does actions. Eg waves when we say bye bye. Claps to clever girl, so she must be able to hear. She just doesn't speak apart from babble.

II'm supposed to have another evaluation done on him because when he was younger he was at risk for some delays. I just haven't done it yet. Guess I need to get on the ball with that.

it can't hurt, i wouldn't worry too much, but since my son has been in therapy(1 year in august) he has improved SO much which has also improved his behavior because he can understand us better and we can understand him better.

I suggest you get his hearing checked. My Brother in law didn't get checked until he was close to 3 and he ended up having to have tubes put in for a couple of years. Same for his DD but she got checked just after two. She has tubes and is now in speech therapy to get her talking better.

But on another note. My 11 yr old DD didn't speak very much until she was 2-2.5 yrs. And my 22 month old is talking up a storm. It could just be that he isn't ready to start talking. But I would suggest getting it checked just to be sure.

What delays if you don't mind me asking?
I'm just asking because my daughter didnt crawl until 11mo or walk until 15mo. Which may be completely fine but its just so 'late' to me because my son was super early with everything! I try not to compare her with what he was doing but it's hard not to sometimes.

NNo he doesn't do any of that. It's like he's off in his own little world majority of the time.

Honestly I have no idea. They didn't really say. All I know is when he was put on oxygen at a month he wasn't progressing like a normal child should. He didn't have good head control or anything like that.

my son is almost 18 months and only says a few words (5 to be exact) i was concerned about it at his last well vist and his doc said some childrens speech is delayed if they are advanced in other skills...for instance i can look at my DS ask him if he wants to go outside he will go sit on the step and try to put his shoes on, he understands completely what im asking him to do he just chooses not to say anthying...his doc said at 18 months is normal for them to use jibberish and "you" the parent should understand atleast 6 of his words =] i would not worry to much momma!

my son didn't crawl until he was a year and he walked at 15mo..
-- i think that the reason he is delayed is because he had kidney/bladder problems. he got a terrible uti when he was 6 mo and he lost 3 pounds.. he also had surgery and he was put under anesthesia twice.--- i strongly believe this is the reason why, because before he got the infection he was doing great, he was actually a little advanced.
