We knew within months of the school year starting that my little brother was in danger of being held back.

OP- I strongly suggest play therapy if your son has any emotional problems or concentration problems.

I learned Chinese in 1st grade. We even learned how to eat like them, and once everybody got it down, we went to a chinese restaurant. Damn it I miss being a little kid. FREE food =)

I agree... Not trying to be rude at all, but Kindergarten is just as serious as any other grade ingrade school. Just because it's not one of the number grades doesn't mean that you shouldn't have tried harder.
Your best bet is to buysome workbooks (you can find them anywhere, even WalMart) for kindergarteners and even first graders and spend some time every day working with him on them. It'll better prepare him for next year, and may help him do better in the years to come.
{{Not trying to judge, but...}} Preschool or not, by that age your child should already know their ABCs, counting to at least 10, plus how to spell their own name. There are many children who enter kindergarten knowing how to read as well. It all comes from what goes on at home.

Quoting ♥B♥:“ I knew how to do most of that before kindergarden.... I have also heard that kids who eat red dye #5, are constantly mistaken for ADHD.... You might want to look into that...”

yeah I'd try biomedical interventions before I start putting meds in my kids system.. My son is a little hyperactive and I've had him on a special diet for ages.. mostly natural stuff.. Guess some ppl prefer the easy way out..

Also, it's up to the PARENT to stay involved with their children's progress in school.. Most teachers are more than happy to help you out, give you pointers and resources.. Being the parent of a school-aged child is about LEARNING things for yourself too!

WOW my son just turned 5 and is autistic and he knows his full name, birthday, address phone number, and how to count in 3 languages. Thats really sad that your son is going to be held back because of your laziness IMO, its your job to teach him all those things so he is ready for school, not wait for someone else to do it for you.

My little sister was born at 28 weeks and is so smart, she skipped kindergarten.

Just a bit of information. She is freakishly smart but a little wise ass
