Jaundice

posted 10th Jun '12
My baby has it.. And although the docs don't seem too concerned it kinda freaks me out! He's been having blood tests every two days..the numbers aren't really changing..the doc says..it's okay he's getting older?? Anyone else have any experience with this?

My oldest had Jaundice and they sent me home with him, Had me feed him and make sure he was pooping every couple hours and then 2 days later I went to the hospital to check his levels. He was normal but they said if he wasn't, They'd admit him and they would have to put him under the billi-light.

My son had jaundice pretty bad. Do you remember what your baby's numbers were? I can give you an idea if it is bad or not. My son should have been in the hospital but by the time we got the lab results back home health was already at our house setting up a special bed light for him. If his number hadn't gone down after the first day he would have been sent to the hospital.
It is normal for babies to have a somewhat high biliruben level in the first few days but it should start going down around day 5-7. Bigger babies and ones with + blood types when the mom has negative are more likely to get it. Any other information you need just let me know. As long as he is being monitored they will do what needs to be done to take care of it.

Yea this too. They told me to strip him to a diaper and maybe walk around the yard in the sunlight. We did that about 10 minutes every 2 hours.

My son was a little bigger than that at birth. He was 13 when we were discharged and at his 5 day check up his levels were at 21. It took quite a few days to get him down to 12 which was when they allowed him to come off the lights. Usually anything 18 and above is when they want to do lights and treatment. I know it is horrible to worry about your new little baby but he will be fine. Just make sure he is eating every 2 hours. And give him time in the sun whenever you can. The eating is super important now because that's how it gets out of his system.
