Keppra - weight gain/loss?

posted 10th Jun '12
Hello all. My doctor put me on Keppra (well I take the generic, not sure if that matters or not) for OCD associated with bipolar on May 22nd. I've noticed that I have lost a little bit of weight since then, just five pounds but to me that's pretty good because I have hypertension and could stand to lose weight. I was on Depakote ER for almost three years (for migraines) and gained over thirty pounds. I've noticed that after I take my Keppra (I take 500 mg three times daily) that I'm not nearly as hungry as I was on the Depakote ER. I actually have to force myself to eat because I don't feel hungry but know I need to eat at least a couple of meals a day. I was wondering if anyone has taken this medication, and if so did you have weight gain or weight loss? Any other comments about your experience with it?

**Or could all this just be from stopping the Depakote ER? Just a thought. It's just weird that I started taking the Keppra and started to lose weight... not complaining though  !**

I'm on keppra 750mg 2 x a day. Have been for 5 years. I have no weight gain from it, no weight loss. I have no side effects. I have been on depakote before and that crap sucks

I hated Depakote ER with a PASSION. The Keppra makes me sleepy when I take it, but I think it's because I haven't quite gotten used to it yet. I had the same thing happen to me with the Depakote (being sleepy).

I've never heard someone say that they like depakote, lol.

I was only on it for a few days before I found out I was pregnant, but I'm thinking about asking for another medication at my next appointment just because of all the horror stories.

I take Keppra for OCD associated with bipolar. It's supposed to help with my migraines too (I think?) but I'm not sure if it is because I've been having three to four migraines a week for the past few weeks :/

What did they have you on Depakote for, if you don't mind me asking?

Keppra is not for migraines as far as I know. My nuerologist gave me a med to take for my migraines aside from the keppra

I have bi polar, OCD, panic/anxiety attacks and severe depression issues.
And to add to it, I think I might also have a sensory processing disorder.

I was also put on Effexor (sp?) and a sedative that I was to take 3 times a day.

But, I found out I was pregnant with this one shortly after starting, and just stopped taking everything. I'm actually really looking forward to my next appointment.

I have panic attacks too. I hope they find something good for you to take. Try asking about Lamictal. It's an awesome drug, I did so well on it but then I got Stevens-Johnson syndrome from it and couldn't take it anymore  .

I hope so to, though I'm also hoping to breastfeed the newb, so I haven't actually made an appointment yet. Haha.

What's Stevens-Johnsons?

It was scary as all get out! Let me tell you. I got it TWICE. Once from Lamictal and once from Tegretol. It was terrible. And thanks! I'm so excited about them (the BRN)!
