Weaning off the breast ..

posted 6th May
Ryan will be one in 3 weeks and I always planned on weaning him at one year. Now that it is approaching I feel as though it is going to be impossible. He is very much attached to the boob, especially at night. I don't want to force him off. I work full time and he takes bottles of breastmilkwhile I'm away but once I walk through that door he wants it. Does anybody have any ideas or pointers?

Yes, I just weaned my daughter a month ago. Start slowing weaning him by taking away one feeding, after about a week or so take away another feeding. Doing it gradually really worked with my daughter.

Did you give her anything in place of that feeding? Bottle/sippy cupof milk? My worry is that he is not a very good eater. He will only eat little bits of food.

I know you said you had planned on weaning him at one year, but does that mean that you WANT TO at this point? From one year on they nurse fewer and fewer times per day, and for less and less time at each feeding. It really is all down hill (as in, pretty easy) from here on out.

Why do you think you need to wean him now?

(Not judging...just asking for more info to answer your question with a better understanding...)

I don't want to wean him completely but he does still nurse very often. I would like him to slowly wean himself since he is so attached to it. He just seems like he isn't interested in eating anything else. Occasionally I can get him to drink some water and eat little tiny pieces of something but not a lot at all. I'm just afraid that him nursing so frequently still is getting in the way of that.

I have this same problem with my daughter. She'll be 1 ina month and won't even take a bottle or a sippy cup. She is very attached to the breast and I feel like there is no way to wean her.She doesn't drink water or juice, just breastmilk. But she does like to drink from an adult cup.

Does she eat solids well?

my son is 14 months and is still breastfeed. my plan was also to only go till he was one. but he honestly nurses less and less all the time. im sure one day he is going to wean himself. lol. he does good with a sippy cup so during the day i give him the ocasionalsippy cupwith milk and sometimes apple juice. and he eats three meals a day with snacks in between. so he eats plenty. he really only nurses now when he istired.when he takes a nap or is going to bed. buti am hoping to have him completelyoff by the time thisbaby comes. i dont want to be breastfeeding two

I may just let him wean himself. If he chooses to do it after he turns one then I will allow it. I'm sure by 1 and a half he will have less interest in it. I'm hoping anyway. It's extremely exhausting pumping all day and nursing all night   I think it is a huge comfort thing for him as well. Most babies have their pacifiers and he doesn't have anything like that.

why dont you start give him milk instead of breast milk when you bottle feed him. instead of pumping all the time. it might help a little bit

We actually just gave him some milk for the first time last week .. He liked it a lot .. I have cut a lot of pumping out of my schedule .. I used to pump 6:30am, 9:30am, 12:30pm and 3:30pm .. I would get home from work around 5:30 .. When I started my new position at work (a lot more time consuming) I cut out the 6:30am and the 12:30 pm pumping sessions .. Now that I'm so busy and tired and he doesn't drink as much during the day when I'm not there I only pump one time in the afternoon
