Rude nurse..

posted 9th Jun '12
I had my 38wk checkup yesterday. The nurse asked again if I'd be getting the whooping cough/tetanus vaccination and I told her I've decided to wait and get it in the hospital after LO is born as I'm not super comfortable with getting it while pregnant and she will get the antibodies from my breast milk. She (again) went on and on about how I should just get it now, that it would transfer to her better now through my placenta than it will through breast milk and how one baby in our state has died etc. Annd again I told her I'd like to wait. I understand her opinion but I feel like since I've made it clear that I've made up my mind it isn't her place to argue with me about it.. buut it got worse..

Then she asked if I've let everyone else know they need to get the vaccine if they want to come in contact with the baby. I told her that SO doesn't get vaccinated and isn't going to be getting it. She totally went off saying "Not even for his baby? He doesn't care enough about his child to get the vaccination anyway?" As if his choosing not to get vaccinated has anything to do with whether or not he cares about our daughter. I told her again that he isn't going to get it and she said "Well then maybe you shouldn't allow him to be around the baby."

Seriously? I should tell my SO that because he doesn't get vaccinated I'm not going to let him be around our child? I couldn't believe she even said that. Seriously so fed up with my doctors office. Also not thrilled that they wouldn't check to see if I'm dilated and said they won't be checking until 40wks because "it doesn't matter before then anyway, then we'll decide how long we want to keep the baby in there."

That's why I don't tell medical people much. And just go uh huh, uh huh.

And truthfully, getting checked is totally pointless. I never got checked, I don't understand why people want to, it means nothing.

whooping cough is very fatal to newborns, and if there is a outbreak in your area, its kind of stupid IMO to not protect against it.

I want to because it eases my mind when she says I'm still closed.   But it is really pointless, it's not like they will un-dilate you lol.

It inspires false hope-- which is exciting for some. Haha.

I wanted to be checked all the time with my first. This time I've said no every time 'cept after my car accident.

I lie and tell them what they want to hear so I don't have to listen to them.

There isn't an outbreak in my area. And either way, I am getting the vaccination and LO will be getting the antibodies from me through my breast milk. I'm just choosing to wait to get it until she is born (sometime in the next couple weeks) instead of getting it now as there isn't any guarantee it is safe for unborn babies.

I know whooping cough is nasty I had it when I was a teenager and ended up in hospital so I can't imagine what effects it has on a newborn I know that sometimes it can be fatal. Just stick to your guns on what you feel is best, when it comes to making decisions for you and your family. Its your body, your child, your life!!!

I know it doesn't make any difference and isn't going to make her come any sooner or later, I guess it's just for my curiosity/peace of mind lol. I obsess about every little thing going on with my body and it makes me totally nuts not knowing what's going on down there

I know, I'm the same way! Every time I go, I'm like, I'm still closed right? What position is the baby in? What station is his head at? What is this pain on my right side? lol. But my midwife is very patient with me. She delivered my last baby who was a preemie so she understands my anxiety.

Id actually tell your doc that your uncomfortable with this nurse because shes pushing her beliefs on you....plenty of people dont vaccinate (i do personally) but some peoples religion go against vaccines and what they consist of. Its all up to you mama and if you have this nurse again let her know shes too pushy and to get another one.

wow...i dont really even know what to say. i got vaccinated only because theres a crazy outbreak in my area and i work with a bunch of retarded fools who catch everything and suck at not spreading smurf around...

and as for the checking, i'd ask to be checked. most start after 35 weeks but i went into L&D one night for spotting and got checked and found out i have a really shortened cervix which was causing pre-term labor issues for me. it was lucky that they decided to check me 'just in case'.
