Parents of kids with autism

posted 8th Jun '12
For those of you who have toddlers with autism I just found out i'm expecting due in late january/early february. My son will be 3 then he has autism, sensory processing disorder, is mostly non verbal but its also due to having dyspraxia, and he doesnt understand alot. He has some behavior issues and aggression. How did you introduce your child with autism to the baby and help prepare them for it and get them to understand what was going on. I told him mommy was going to have a baby and had him put his hand on my tummy and say hey baby but you could tell he didn't understand. He knows what a baby is and i tried to show him a baby and say we were going to have a baby. Anyway, i'm jjust trying to get advice on preparing him for the new baby and when the baby gets here keeping him from accidently hurting them.

I just bought a lot of books for him to read. It's the best was to communicate to him; showing pictures and telling him about babies.
He handled her birth decently, he wouldn't look at her for a few days. Then suddenly it just seemed to dawn on him- and he's been great.
Best of luck! Sorry I don't have much more to give you.

My son was diagnosed late. He was 6 so he already had 2 brothers. He is high functioning so it's a little different but, I'm just trying to help :-) I would suggest going to the book store and getting one of the books that teaches kids about having a new brother or sister....and possibly getting a baby doll to start showing him about how little babies are and about appropriate behavior around babies. I know that it takes a long time for ASD kids to process change. I am currently expecting my fourth child and though he doesn't seem to really notice he knows the baby is coming and I trust him around the baby. We have other babies in the family and I think that has helped him understand more about the ways babies act as well (ie crying and sleeping needs)....Hope I was of some help.

My behavior concerns are he is real hyper and he bangs his head, hits, bites, throws toys and stuff and some other things that i can't think of right away. He is in behavioral therapy so i will definately talk to him when he goes back so he can know about it.

Just out of curiosity...because I know my son is prone to emotional breakdowns mostly at school, he mostly just cries and is hard to calm. Have they ever tried a pressure tunnel or a weighted vest? I guess those two things are really helpful with behavioral issues for some kids with autism. My son has a vest that they used in the past to help him transistion in school.

I asked about it and they told me just to use an old heavy quilt like a weighted blanket but he didn't sit still to use it.

That would be a pain to try to hold on him.
I use a shoulder blanket that just wraps around his shoulders- batman style.
