only getting foremilk while pumping

posted 8th Jun '12
i recently started to pump again after stopping for about 1-2 months. i have been pumping morning and night and it seems like i am only able to get the foremilk out and not much hind milk. i know the milk is in there it just isnt coming out. i have been drinking more liquids and taking fenugreek pills for about 4 days now. and still no luck. do any of you have any suggestions?

I have the same problem no matter what I do. My boobs just hate the pump.

Sounds funny, but when I pump I watch DS while he plays. His cuteness makes my milk let down even when my boobs feel empty! Haha!

I'm confused. This is your first baby? Shouldn't you only be getting colostrum out?

yes he is my first baby but he is almost 7 months old. colostrum is only for a couple days once you start breastfeeding until your milk comes in which happened on the 4th day for me

Try pumping one side while nursing on the other.

do you use an electric or manual pump..i use an electric, but sometimes it just doesnt want to empty my breast so I have to go to a manual and it eventually empties it. then again...if you stopped for a while, it may just be a supply and demand thing. If your baby is only drinking like 5 oz regularly then you try pumping you probably wont get more than that, probably less. hope you figure it out

I have a medela pump in style also. I exclusively pump for my almost 8 month old because he refuses to go back to the boob...and the pump only empties them about halfway by itself, the rest, I have to also squeeze while its pumping. And THEN when I'm done pumping, I hand express anything that's left. It is a pain in the ass!!! Pumps just don't work as well as a baby

I have the Pump in Style too, and I work full time so I spend a loooot of time hooked up to it like a cow.

Your problem could actually be over supply. Even if you're not getting a ton at once I read that getting foremilk only is a sign of over supply. If thats not it, maybe try increasing your suction periodically then turning it back down. When my boobs are being stubborn I dial it up high and sometimes that stimulates a good letdown in conjunction with hitting the letdown button.

This happened to me. I used to get a TON of milk out and then I stopped for a while and tried pumping again... I only got like 1-2oz between both beasts. Babies are more efficient and getting milk out so it can happen.

I think it's just that your breasts realize the way the pump sucks of the way the baby does is much different. Oh and i went on to breastfeed until 13 months so it wasn't my supply. >.< It was just weird.
