The earliest a doctor should do it is 37 weeks. Some wont until 39 or even 40+ just depends on your doctor. You need to be dilated at least to a 1 because they have to get their finger in the cervix to do it.

Most doctors make you wait until you're 39+ weeks before they'll even think about doing it. I don't know about being dilated, but if your body isn't ready even if you get it done it'll do nothing.

I was 38 weeks 5 days, 3 cm dialated and 90% effaced when I had my membranes swept. I went into labor 2 days later.

Quoting Heather otero:" kinda a stupid question, does it hurt?"
i would say more uncomfortable then painful. Although the less you're dilated the more it can hurt.

It hurt me pretty bad I think the midwife was a little rough though.

I think it depends on your midwife/doctor.
I've heard of some women getting it done when they were 37 weeks along, but never before then.
Mine were swept when I was 38 weeks and 4 days, I gave birth the next day. I think the only reason why they went ahead of did mine is because starting at 36 weeks LO's heart rate was going up to 210 while otherwise healthy. They were concerned about his size since I was already measuring ahead, and my fluid was in the normal range. My BP was also high 2/3 times they checked.

the earliest my doctor would even consider is 38 1/2 weeks closer to 39 weeks.

The membrane strip can be done when you are effaced & Atleast 1CM dilated.
It does NOT always work though!! I had this done with my first child. I was 1cm dilated & 100% effaced, @ 39 Weeks i got this done because i heard about it from a friend, And after I got it done i had mild cramping as they told me I would & Said IF the membrane strip works I will be back in the hospital in labor within 36 Hours. Sadly, It didn't work for me I ended up going 41 Weeks & 3 Days before being induced. Although with this pregnancy if I don't go early I plan on trying the membrane strip again. It is slightly painful for a few seconds but worth the try. Hope this helps.

I was 37 weeks, 4 cm. and 90% effaced. It sent me into false labor, which reeeally hurt. It also caused my water to leak, and put my daughter at risk for infection, so I had to be induced at 38 weeks.

Membrane sweeps hardly ever work, all the doctor does is scrape his finger/fingernail on your cervix to irritate it basically.

Be patient, I know your more than ready but its really benificial to keep the baby in at least 38 weeks, I had one at 35+5 and one at 39+3 and the difference in there development was amazing!

You can ask your doctor to induce you, which usually wont happen until your at least 38 weeks. You have to better reason than just wanting it, my duedate was right around the two weeks my ex was going to be gone with the military so they we're willing to do it.
