Aspergers Questions

posted 8th Jun '12
I think my 3 year old son may have Aspergers.
These are the symptoms that I have noticed:
-very hyperactive
-obsessed with certain subjects (Trains/Robots) the inability to focus on other things.
-refers to himself in 3rd person.
-Can speak very well for his age but can't stay with a conversation
-hates change ( he hates that I am home with him and his dad is now working. I worked 70 hours a week for the first 2 years of his life and his dad was a stay at home dad I lost my job in October after being placed on light duty so my husband went to work)
-having a very hard time potty training him
-he hits/bits/pinches himself.
-He will get overly emotional if he has to share
-He goes to other peoples homes and thinks it is his home and that their things belong to him.
-He goes from talking in a normal voice to yelling back to a normal voice.

I looked up a few websites and they just made me more paranoid.
Is this normal 3 year old behavior or does it seem that it may be Aspergers or something else. Should I just bite the bullet and call his doctor to have them test him.

(This is my first post on bg, sorry if there are grammar or spelling errors.)

That all just sounds like stress to me. Kids don't handle change very well and then the hyperactivity is just part of kids.

my close friends baby has asphergers. does your son repeat himself a lot? like ask a question then 5 mins later ask the same question? does he maintain eye contact? can he stay on onen subject while speaking or doing something for longer than 10 mins?

oh and a key thing is...does he freak out or not know how to handle situations with a lot of people?

He repeats himself constantly. He can never stay on topic. And he doesn't like to make eye contact at all. He will look away.

The biggest red flag I see is the inability to carry a conversation, if you push it what does he do?

How does he relate to other kids?

Does he pretend?

All of the red flags can be normal, it's the context and the intensity that makes the most difference

This is my favorite breakdown it's more so for autism, but they usually screen/diagnosis autism before they will aspergers at this age

He seems to get over whelmed in large group settings. At daycare he removes himself as far away from the group as he can but still appear to be in the group. Like when I go pick him up and they are outside he will be with about 3 or 4 other kids but be a foot or so away and doing his own thing not being apart of the group.

sounds like my close friend's baby. you should maybe ask for a referral to see a specialist..if not doesn't hurt to check

I try to redirect him but if he gets too flustered I will stop. I will ask him what he wants for a snack and he will say something like "the robots outside are after the birds go get them mommy" I will repeat the question and if he doesn't give me an answer I just pick what he eats. He likes to stack things in order. He will put his train tracks together in the same pattern over and over again. He will stack things in order on top of each other.

Thanks for the replies. I am hoping it is normal and I am just being overly cautious if not he is my baby and I will do what ever I need to do for him.

Sorry to tell you but it sounds like he may have ASD or PDD....his behaviors arent typical for a 3yr old and as soon as you find out what the issue is you can start learning how to help him cope w/his differtences.

i think you should call the doctor. My brother has aspergers and you just described what he has perfectly. Nothing bad about aspergers. If he has it, you'll have one brilliant (sorry if thats spelled wrong) child =] My brother has aspergers and anger issues on top of the anger that comes with it. It gets pretty bad =/ But i know a girl that had it and she was a total sweetheart

I would get him evaluated for sure.

It could be many things though, not necessarily autism or Aspergers. We thought our son had autism, turns out it is dysphasia. We thought our daughter had dysphasia, turns out it was autism lol. My nephew had autistic like behavior, turns out he has severe ADHD and OCD.

I was told that a child between 0-6 suffering a global developmental delay like motor skills, speech, learning disabilities etc, can have autistic like behavior. Communication and personal growth is difficult for them. It's like they remain closed in within themselves since communication both expressive and receptive and self control are impaired and they can become obsessive over the few things they can have control over like routine, toys etc.

When you say he is advanced verbally and he repeats himself. Does he use the words spontaneously when required. Like "Mom, I would like an apple" and he is hungry for an apple. Or is it more like echolalia. As in he can repeat very complicated and long sentences or words. But just repeats them when they are heard. There is no conversation there and the words are not used spontaneously. Like: "LO Would you like some orange juice?" LO: "Would you like orange juice?" or "Orange juice?" The intonation is identical to your question but LO is not asking a question, just imitating and shows no evidence that he understands the question, or answers yes or no to the question.

That's why evaluation for autism and other disabilities are long and re evaluated many times after therapy over the next few years. I would book an app ASAP. The earlier the intervention the better outcome can be acquired. It would also get your LO ready for school

His pediatrician is on vacation for until late June. He has an appointment in July and I will bring up my concerns and see what testing is suggested.

Thanks for the helpful input it helps me to not feel so crazy or overwhelmed.
