My 3 month old throws a tantrum when someone else holds her

posted 7th Jun '12
I don't know what to do about it. It's not a small cry either, she wails. It even takes her a long time to calm down even after they give her back to me. Is there something I can do? Everywhere I read it says that 3 months is too young to start acting like this.

It isn't a tantrum. It's anxiety, she's scared, she doesn't know these people. It's perfectly normal for her to be scared about strangers, YOU are her world. Right now she thinks she is connected to you, like you're the same person. She will eventually outgrow this. Do not try to 'correct' or 'punish' this behavior.

This exactly. She's having massive separation anxiety.

A 3 month old is not capable of throwing tantrums.

It's not a tantrum, it's crying. That's how the communicate and if she's crying that hard then she's saying she isn't comfortable with other people right now.

Try staying very close to her when you hand her to someone else, so she can still see you maybe?

Then again when my kids were little they met people they just DID NOT like -- I made reasonable excuses for my kids but it happened with both kids, same people, same reaction

although ANYONE? no...my kids had favorite people; just keep reassuring her and stay close so she can see you while others hold her

This.
babies really think you and them are the same person for about a year and half-2 years depending on the child. At least that s what the head nurse was telling us.
My daughter never had those fits. she pretty much likes everyone. I just handed her to people ( fam, friends, not strangers) all the time when she was little. I never made a big deal about it.
