Baby Shower Question

posted 3rd Jun '12
I already have 5 little girls and we just found out that we are having a little boy in October. My best friend wants to throw me a baby shower but my MIL keeps telling me that it isn't appropriate to have one because he is not my first child and that you are only supposed to have one for your first child. She says that no one will show up and that it's just plain tacky of me to even think of having one.

My question is would it be okay to have one for our little boy? I have only had one with my first little girl so I am not sure...

HELP!

I am having a baby shower with this baby, no matter if it's a boy or girl. I've never heard of only one baby shower and that's for the first born before I joined BG. Everyone I know has had one for each baby.

I think it's more approiate since you're having a boy this time. *shrug* I'd say have it.

I don't see why not? You have 5 girls, so you really don't have anything for a boy. My sister had a baby shower for her daughter & her son. It didn't seem tacky at all

If your friend wants to throw you one let her. You are going to need all sorts of new things for a boy. I think its only bad if you were trying to throw your own.

I don't see why it's not okay to have one for a boy because you don't have anything boy yet. not like anyone has to come or buy you anything if they disagree.

Wow. That is something my MIL would say.

I've been saving all of my sons clothes for when I have my next child. But if I find out I am having a girl, I am definitely going to throw a small baby shower. I wouldn't throw anything extravagant. Maybe have some close family and friends come. I've also thought of having my DH throw a diaper and wipes party when the time came. I do not think it's tacky at all.

Seriously, when you think about it, a baby shower is a celebration party for a new arrival. What would be so tacky about that?

I don't think it's tacky. You're having a boy but I would call it more of a celebration and give people the option to bring a gift so no one feels like they have to. That's what I've done for all my kids though. I don't really look at a baby shower as a way to get things for the baby but more a get together of people who love and support me.

A baby shower is a party to "shower" the mother to be with gifts to help prepare for a baby. If you want to celebrate the new life, have a party afterwards, then people can meet the baby.

Just out of pure curiosity, how is it tacky? Like I stated, I have never heard of it being tacky before, and everyone I know, that has multiple children, had one for each child.

Yes, I would throw my own. But it would be small, at my house. I wouldn't register anywhere, because I know my close family/friends would buy me clothes and things. I wouldn't need bigger items, like a crib, swing, etc, since mine are pretty much all neutral. And even if they weren't made for a girl, I still wouldn't care if my daughter was swinging in a blue swing.

I agree that's what a baby shower means that's why I just call it a celebration. Having one after the baby is born is a good idea but I'm the type of person who doesn't take my baby out of the house for the first month or really let anyone over because I get super worried about the newborn getting sick.
