Taking LO's bottle away?

posted 2nd Jun '12
So, My son will be 10 months old in a week and I still give him a bottle..A lot of my friends are saying I shouldn't give it to him anymore and give him a sippy cup instead...But, if he's still drinking formula why would I give him a sippy cup? When should I take it away or should I have taken it away already?

I took my kids' bottles away when I weaned them to whole milk at about a year. I introduced the sippy at about 6/7 months so that they could get used to them, but once they were on whole milk it was strictly cups from then on... I just didn't offer them bottles anymore.

Start introducing a sippy with water in it when he's eating food now, then when you take formula away at 12 months and and give milk, start giving him just the sippy. That's kind of what we did but LO was still nursing so it took him a bit longer to get the sippy cup down.

Athena had always done well with change (wish that was still the case). My dad told me a good time to switch is when she could hold her own bottle. I held out a few more months and made the bottles disappear. She was perfectly fine with it.

I agree with you on the formula from bottles, milk from sippies idea. He's only 10 months, no need to rush. He's a baby and still has that need to suckle. I mean, BF moms don't stop nursing at 10 months. I know, completely diferent, but the way I figure a bottle is the closest thing DS had to a breast to suckle from, KWIM?

Totally. I wish I could've kept BF'ing him. I did in the hospital and for about 3 days at home but, he got really lethargic and got jaundice and was dehydrated and I realized he wasn't getting enough or none at all, my milk never came in, all I had was colostrum, It came in eventually but, I was so scared he'd get sick again I just stayed on formula.   it really bummed me out.

I know how you feel, mama. I never attempted to breastfeed because I took the advice of some misinformed doctors who told me a medicine I was on after birth was unsafe for DS, so by the time I knew differently, my milk was gone   I beat myself up to, but my baby is healthy, and happy, so there's really no need to. I'm becoming more okay with it everyday.

Same here, I try not to feel bad about it because he's healthy, happy, and growing non-stop but, I'd still wish it would've worked out for us. I loved it in the hospital, when we were alone and he was feeding. It was amazing. But, it's nice to be able to let someone else feed him and I can do other things, like take a shower lol.
