I think some of the guidelines vary by state, but I'm sure these are the same for all:
No criminal background
Must have a bedroom for the child that is not shared and has a bed and dresser/closet.
I believe you have to be 21 years of age
Also income plays a role in it I'm sure

Check with your local DHS, they would have more info

Why can't kids share rooms? I shared a room with my foster sister.

I don't know to be honest, I looked into it a couple months ago and that was one of the guidelines here, I will see if I can find it again.

Maybe it's a new thing? Or varies by state? Because we had to have a bunvh of inspections and we always shared. My yoingest brothher even slept in the living room with no problems. (he had to have nurses at nigjt because he was hooked up to so many machines.)

Maybe they changed the wording or I assumed it meant a room not shared, but these are the guidelines for Oregon:

  • You can be single, married, or domestic partners

  • You can live in a house or apartment, but must have a bedroom for a child

  • You can work inside or outside the home

  • You must be at least 21 years of age or older1

  • You must have sufficient income to support your family

  • You must be able to physically care for a child

  • You must pass a child abuse and criminal background check2

Sounds like it just has to be child safe and not shared with an adult.

I just checked and in my state you have to be 25 to be a foster parent   So I will wait 2 more years lol! I feel so sad I have been seeing tons of flyers and commercials for foster parents needed. I talked to SO and he asked what was needed like he would consider it! Makes me feel good to know that he is willing to offer our home and love to a child in need!

I hope so! I haven't talked with anyone yet, but I was bummed to see what I just posted above because I really want to foster and possibly foster to adopt. But my home is 4 bedrooms and I already have 2 kids and planning on having at least one more. So I would pretty much have to put all my kids in the same room if I wanted to foster more than one child at a time going by what I read, anyway.

This is why I deleted the topic lol because I found the info :-) amazing what a little google does for myself lol!!!! But here it is

Before you become a foster or adoptive parent, there are a few basic requirements that you need to fulfill:
•You must be at least 25 years of age;
•
Your family must be stable and everyone must be
interested in caring for a foster child;
•
No one in your home, or caring for the child may
have a criminal record;
•Your income must be equal to, or exceed, your expenses;
•
The health of your family members must allow for the
care of normally active youngsters;
•
Your home must be suitably equipped, safe and clean
and have sufficient space to accommodate additional
children;
•
Safe, insured transportation must be available and drivers must have currently valid California drivers' licenses and clean driving records;
•
You must be open to a team approach for the care
of the placed children, cooperating fully with Agency
personnel and birth families;
•
You must complete the entire application process,
including 24 hours of pre-certification training, nine
additional hours of training during the first year
following certification and 15 hours each year thereafter.
•You must agree to comply with all Title XXII, State, County and SCFFAA regulations.

DH and I feel the same way. We want to give our love so badly. We also want to adopt, but older children like 5+ and are considering adopting siblings. It just breaks my heart to know there are so many children that just want a safe loving home/family.

Haha! I almost posted the same question a couple months ago, but googled instead, and Viola!

California's guidelines are really detailed! I wonder why the minimum age is 25?

I have no idea =/ it's so crazy how things can vary by state when it comes down to a human being I think it should be the same everywhere but that's just me
