Non tippers

posted 1st Jun '12
This question is mainly for servers or those in the restaurant businesss but if you are either of those you are still welcome to post your opinions. What do you think of customers who not only do not tip but also order someting on the menu that is bottomless and makes the server walk back and forth for several hours? The reason I bring this up is because one of my friends actually did this and felt it was not the customer's responsibility to pay anyone's salary.

I was a waitress for a while. We always remembered those customers when they returned. I wonder if it ever dawned on any of them why it started taking 30 minutes to get service.

I think the only time a person should not leave a tip, is if it is truly not deserved. I have had pretty smurffy service and still left something. I am always embarrassed ( and actually refuse to eat out with certain people) because they are so rude, demanding and don't tip.

I tip depending on the service provided. If i feel the waiter/waitress has done their job I tip well. If they have done less then I feel they could have I tip poor. If they were just horrible (this doesn't happen to often) I don't tip at all. You need to tell your friend that if they don't mind they price of their meals doubling the continue not tipping. But if they want to avoid that then they need to tip their hard working waitstaff.

I used to waitress at Ruby Tuesday's and your friend is right. It's not the customer's responsibility to pay my salary.

That's why I worked hard to always provide superior service.

It's disappointing to get no tip, but there's a reason it's called a tip and not "obligatory extra money"

Like it or lump it, IMO

I hate the whole tipping thing anyway - I think it's a way that the companies who hire people should pay a wage that makes sense to the job. That said, I always tip generously and would be embarrassed not to. Somone who makes the server go above and beyond with no compensation is an ass.

i hate when it happens. I'm a server at Waffle House...our food is cheap so we get smurffy tips all the time. I could give someone the best service, be nice, always there to refill their drinks and make sure their food is fine and they will still leave nothing on the table. It pisses me off but i get used to it.. I understand its part of the job, some people just dont tip, or they tip smurffy. I work a slow shift also so it really sucks when i dont turn that many tables and get stuck with $2-3 tips all night

I mean, it's not a legal responsibility or anything like that, but it's an ethical responsibility. If you're going to willingly have a service be provided to you, it's only right to tip. Tips are a server's salary. That's why there's a mandatory gratuity with large parties at most restaurants.

He is now deceased but he was pretty much the all around customer from hell. Anytime he bought something he would use it for the 30 days then return it. He called it free rentals. He once got a really good deal on a trade in. He bought a brand new stereo, took it out of the box and put the old one in it and got his money back. He made it look like he never opened it. He would also sometimes pay for thing with a cupful of loose pennies and say he was a changed man.
