colposcopy??

posted 1st Jun '12
At my first Dr appointment they did a PAP, which is completely normal, I was 11 wks along at the time. Well it showed some abnormal cells. The Dr told me at my next appointment (around 15 wks) it wasn't really anything to worry about, just DO NOT miss a PAP next year. Now I'm 24 almost 25 wks along and with a different Dr because I moved states and get a call from my old one saying I need a colposcopy. You think they would have told me this when they first found the abnormal cells instead of just, oh make sure you don't miss your PAP in a year, not months after they found out and I'm at a different Dr. This was my first PAP (considering I had never been to an Ob/Gyn till I got pregnant) and I was like, ok well if the Dr says its nothing to worry about I shouldn't worry. Anyways what is a colposcopy and what should I expect if my Dr here gives me one??

Colposcopies can be dangerous during pregnancy. Many doctors won't do them.

Your doctor will insert a camera into your vagina and examine your cervix with a microscope. If need be, he will do a biopsy. I had one done last year, and it didn't really hurt. It was just awkward. The only thing that hurt was when he put the vinegar on my cervix. It burned. Everything came back normal, thankfully.

It wasn't that bad, just very uncomfortable.
They're basically taking a piece of the abnormal cells and doing a biopsy.
Expect to have some weird blood for a couple days.

I was wondering about this... you'd think her doc would hold off on the colposcopy.

Why would my old Dr call and tell me I need one soon then??

A colposcopy is ok done during pregnancy. It's a PAP with a microscope. That's all a colposcopy is - a microscope. What often can come along with having it done is a biopsy. They don't usually do a biopsy during pregnancy. I had a colp done in my 2nd trimester, no biopsy because of being pregnant. There was some extra discomfort from the speculum being in for those 10 mins or so though, usually with a PAP they are really quick.

When I haven't been pregnant, and had the colposcopy with biopsy, it was uncomfortable and had some dark blood present.

It's very important to have regular PAP smears. A colposcopy is when they take a closer look at the cervix, if you have abnormal cells it's usually followed by a cervical biopsy, but I don't think they'd do that during pregnancy, or at least mine didn't. A coposcopy is not dangerous during pregnancy, but I'd think a biopsy, which is where they take a piece of tissue from the cervix can potentially be. Talk to your current doctor about it, and make sure you have your previous medical records sent to your new doctor's office.

They just called yesterday from the old Dr I was at to tell me I needed one. I have an appointment with my new Dr. Thursday, so I was just gonna bring it up then. So if its not good I doubt they'll do one since I'm already "high risk"

Double check with them first. Maybe it's the only the biopsies that can be dangerous.

I was in a similar situation while pregnant with DS2. I had my normal pap and it came back with abnormal cells. The dr told me that they wouldnt do anything about it while pregnant but after delivery and a couple months PP they would want to do a colposcopy. Well after giving birth my insurance changed so I was never able to get the colposcopy. Instead I ended up having to get the pap done again instead. Well im so glad they made me do that because this time around the pap came back normal.

From what I have been told by doctors during pregnancy your immune system goes down and abnormal cell changes can happen. The can go back to normal after giving birth when your body goes back to normal, or they can slough off during child birth.
My Doctor told me it really wasnt something to worry about.
Cervical cancer is one of the most treatable and preventable cancers...and cell changes dont automatically mean cancer anyways.

I'll definitely be sure to ask about how dangerous it can be for sure. They're already doing measurements of my cervix at most of my appointments. I've only had one so far with this new Dr, cause its taking forever to get my medicaid up here. Its been a full month and I'm still "pending" but the Dr took me cause it was almost 2 months since I had seen a Dr and I'm having twins.

Why don't you just google it instead of letting people scare you? They're just going to look at your cervix, not dilate it.

The only reason I'm kind of worried about it (I was when I first found out, my dad had to calm me down on the phone) is because my grandmother got diagnosed with cervical cancer while she was pregnant with my dad. They gave her 4 months to live and wanted her to abort my father. Needless to say, she is still alive 43 years later, but still it does run in the family.
