re: Origins of circumcision in the U.S.A.

posted 6th May '08
DAMN you guys D: I miss the most of the first circumcision debate since I joined cause I had to nap. Darn the timing.

SO. OLD post, second page I think, because no one bothered to bring it up.

Quoting Cowgirl47429:“ I did in fact reseach circumcision before I decided it was best. I personaly dont care why it "started" ... [snip!] ... Its not like they can impregnant their hand or a sock so I dont know why anyone ever worried about it to begin with.”

Where exactly did you do your research? Because I'm sure some medical facilities would be very interested in your findings. It might sway their decision and standings, to find this research you've done that prioved to you that STDs and cervical cancer (WTF?! Cancer is CANCER. Friction with a foreskin is not going to produce cancer cells, where in the hell did you find that, and why in the hell did you believe it?) could be prevented by this cosmetic surgery, but as of yet, no medical organizations (including womens and mens specifically) support circumcision. If there was indeed any sort of connection between prevented STDs, prevented cervical cancer, and circumcision, don't you think they would have jumped on it? There is no medical reason for routine circumcision.
---
Why do we care about circumcision being performed on babies that aren't our own? Why do we care about abuse of children that aren't ours? Why do we care about politicians [that aren't ours] that we can't elect but sure as hell are going to effect our country? Why do we care about this fucked up weather?

I'm not comparing global warming with the snip of a newborn's foreskin. I'm saying we care about unnecessary routine circumcision for the reasons that we care about anything that isn't two inches in front of our noses and does not [yet] have a direct effect on us.
And in another sense, why would we debate anything at all that didn't directly relate to us? Whether some stupid mother should have been imprisoned for 3 years or 10. Whether people were nitpicking word usage or if Obama really was out of line with his one noted speech in reference to teenage pregnancy. Whether hybrid cars really do help the environment and if so, why doesn't everyone get a free one? (free cars, hell yea >_>)

And why in the hell is ANYONE comparing VOLUNTARY tummy-tucking with INVOLUNTARY circumcision?

...I hate being late ): Crucify me.

Look it up yourself. It has been proven that circumcision lowers your risk of catching a STD and has lowered the risk of a partner developing cervical cancer. My research was done on fact I was told from numerous doctors and stuff I had looked up in books and on the internet. It has nothing to do with friction. It has to do with the part of the penis that has the most and fastest absobtion for things like STD's and whatever else that might lead to cancer is in the foreskin. Everything I looked up and was told by doctors said it lowers the risk of both. Now go do your own research.

I did my own research, and can infact provide proof against your claim.

I'm not really involved because I think people can make their own choices about th whole thing...but your comments are not right so I had to point that out.

ok so this is what got me...it HAS been linked to prevent STDs.
http://www.circinfo.net/

and the cancer cells are cancer cells yeah but cervicle cancer is only caused by HPV and HPV is an STD...so if there is prevention of HPV form STD's then there is prevention of cervical cancer.

maybe you should do more research.

also I was in the medical field..and know TONS of doctors who do support circumscision...because of the benefits down the road.

now I am not sayin ghtat I am completely FOR the procedure...I think it is a personal and individual choice of the parents.

Apparently from what I read on those sites she posted she has it based on that guysmight be a lot more sexually active because they have a lower risk. Of course if you double the number of partners that are unprotectedyou increase the risk. Thats a given we all know that. However, there is no evidence that shows if a guy is circumsized he will be more sexually active and even if they were its still their choice to do so. It does in fact lower the risk of both in those who have a equally active sex life.

MANY medical organizations support circumcision. I have yet to see a doctor who does not support it or advises against it in person although they all tell you pros and cons both ways even though they are for it. My Step-mom is a RN and works with a doctor who does it not only on infants but adults as well.

I should do more research, yea. Thing is, I was satisfied before when I'd done my digging that I'd found sufficient evidence to believe circumcision to be entirely cosmetic. This is the first time I've seen anything that said circumcision could have any medical benefits at all (aside of course claims from parents, which are usually debunked by more than a handful of anti-circumcision organizations that I happened to find when googling rather nuetral phrases, such as 'circumcision std' etc), and I've done my share of googling and searching during these types of debates. Never discussed it with the hospital simply because it's not practiced here, and we'd decided beforehand that it wasn't going to happen anyway, no matter where our son was born.

I still believe proper cleaning and care of a natural penis is a much more effective and much less painless way of STD prevention >_> But that's just my opinion.

it is a personal decision.

Exactly, pros and cons either way so its up to you to do what you think is best. Its no different then if you choose to be a vegitarian, vegan or not. Its your choice.

Personally, I think condoms are the best way to prevent STDs.

That way, circumcised or not, you're not catching them.

I dunno, that just doesn't seem a good reason to me. Saying having a circumcised penis lowers the chance of STD contraction seems to be an invite to go around having sex bareback.

True its the best way is a condom but invite or not people do it either way. Circumsized or not. I think that part boils down to morals and how they view sexual activity. Then again most men dont know it lowers the risk even if they are circumsized. My husband had no clue until I told him even though he is.
