Any TTC'ers with thyroid problems?
posted 4th May
My husband and I are ttc our first child. I have hashimoto's thyroiditis and have been told that it may be hard to get and stay pregnant. Usually the mother only has a problem if her thyroid levels are off...mine are pretty much back to being normal. Anyways is there anyone out there that has any type of thyroid problems and have had difficulty getting pregnant? Thanks!

I have hypothyroidism...my doctor said if your thyroid level is over a 6, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get pregnant. I had been seeing a different dr for the last 6 years until I went to the one who told me that about the levels....this new dr got my levels strightened out and leveled off in Sept. 07, and low and behold I was pregnant Oct. 07

I have been hypothyroid since may of 2002. In the beginning my levels were all over the charts and wouldnt balance. But eventually they did. I had my first pregnancy in 1998 and it ended in miscarriage at 7 weeks and 1 day. My second pregnancy ended in September 2001 with my healthy baby girl, which I had so much trouble with during pregnancy. I did not get diagnosed with the disease until May of 2002. So my first two pregnancies were not affected by it. However, some people swear that you have a higher chance of getting the disease after you have had a child! My third pregnancy was full of complications as well and this was during the time I was diagnosed but they told me that my levels were normal so it wasnt that. I delivered my second girl and nearly bled to death on theOR table. My last pregnancy was full of trouble from the start and ended in miscarriage of my sweet dear beautiful twins this past march 16th. They were 18 weeks and it was due to placental abruption. That is a known common side effect of having hypothriodism. I have googled it to death. After I lost my boys they checked my levels and they were gone completly nuts. Now I am Hyperthriod instead of the hypothroid that I have been for years. I am waiting for test results now. We have just begun the TTC precess again. I pray you conceive soon and I wish you all the luck.
Make sure you have a high risk doctor and leave no stone unturned.
Hugs

I "think" I'm hypothyroid, just found out after having my son! My primary care dr says my levels are ok but I think we need them to be a little lower, my last check my TSH was 3.1,my ob said less than 3 is what he wants them to be,what are all of yours?

Neither of my dr's said they thought it would cause a problem with me conceiving, I'm not sure how high your levels need to be to cause a problem. Does anyone know?

When I first got diagnosed with hypothroidism, my levels were in the high 100's and they couldnt believe that I was still able to function. But now my levels are -0.04 which makes me hyperthyriod. I am having my levels rechecked on the 14th so I will let you know.

my dr told me anything above a 6 you can;t get pregnant and anything over 10 is considered very bad

Mine was right at 8 when i was diagnosed. It caused horrible panic attacks and anxiety...thank God that they caught it in time before it got too out of control. I do know that people that have hashimoto's disease almost always have to increase or even double the dosage of meds they are on. I wish everyone the best of luck on getting pregnant soon!***** Baby dust*****

Yes, I have Graves' disease. Getting preg was easy ( 2nd month TTC was successful), however, my levels were hyper when I conceived and unforunately, I miscarried at 9 weeks. I am now wondering the same thing....Anyone have success ( I am sure some have...) please share with us!
Did anyone see a Repro. Endo? Are we considered hi risk if we have a thyroid disease? My OB said that I wasn't hi risk, but I feel that my TSH/T3 /T4 levels need to be monitored more closely next time.

I must add, I had radiation in 1997 for Graves'. so I am on synthetic ( synthroid & cytomel combo therapy) thyroid hormones..I am still hyper even after lowering my med levels..This has been 9 months now, and I am still not "norm". After 9 years of having my thyroid levels managed, all of a sudden they went out of whack.
What is everyone else taking?

I am on 75 mcg of synthroid six days a week and 5 mcg of cytomel. Last time I had my levels checked I was in the hyper tsh range at .05. At what level of hyper do miscarriages occur...i only though that being hypo was dangerous to the baby...i guess i need to do some research ! Thanks for the replying! Best of luck to you!!!

I've only begun the ttc journey. I've been hypothyroid for 10 years. I'm currently taking 100mcg of levothyroxine a day and 5mcg of cytomel twice daily. Just recently my TSH was as high as 32!
I go in for a recheck of my levels first part of June. After I get the all clear I hope to be able to conceive easily.
This is a great thread! Keep the replies coming!

I was wondering what does prescribing cytomel in addition to levothyroxin do? My dr has never even mentioned it.
