how do I tell my son about his surgery?

posted 30th May '12
I was hoping you mommas would be able to help me with something!!My son will be 5 this July and he has an appointment with the Ear Nose and Throat Dr tomorrow to discuss my concern about his enlarged tonsils. They are almost touching and look like grapes, you can see the veins in them!!A little background on his medical history.... He has tubes in his ears already and had his adenoids out when he was three.. I'm nervous and don't know how to tell him what the Dr is going to do and how to explain everything after the procedure and how he can't cry.and scream because the risk of bleeding .. if your child had theirs taken out how did u explain it so they weren't scared?? Any tips on making him more comfortable after ?? My tonsils were removed when I was 16 and it was horrible.. I hear the older u are the harder it is.. so that's why I'd rather him get it over w now and plus he's suffered enough w the things.. we tried a steroid and everything to get the swelling down and it didn't work.. any advice will be appreciated (: thank you

I was 4 when I got my adenoids out and tubes put in my ears, I don't even remember my mom telling me to be honest. But I'm happy you're getting his tonsils out this early, the doctors refused to take mine out until I was a week away from being 16, and I had so many tonsil problems from when I got my first surgery and getting them out.

Having his tonsils out at age 5 will be a LOT easier than it was for you. Having them out when you are older is much more painful and it takes longer to heal. My younger son had his out when he was 7 or 8...he healed quickly and it was pretty easy for him.

That's what my family said but the doctor said something about wanting to hold off until he's a little older because his age.. but I hear of kids around that age getting their tonsils out..

My daughter was attacked by a pit when she was 2. She still has fears of the surgeries.. I tell her that the doctor's are trying to help her so she feels better, and that I will be right where she needs me anytime she needs me. Hope your lil guy feels better!

Oh most definitely that's why I want him to have it done when he's younger cause they bounce back so much quicker from what I hear..

My cousin got his taken out at 4 or 5 and was up playing around when he got home.
I also got mine taken out when I was 16. WORST ever! They forced me to eat a popsicle before I left (they didn't tell me, but it was so I could throw up before I left   ) I couldn't eat for a week and a half, cried whenever I had to swallow spit, and lived on the couch for 2 weeks. When I thought I was feeling better, I went to take a shower and came seconds away from passing out. Worst experience ever!!! Lol.
I hear all of the time that the younger, the better.
Like a momma said up top, just tell LO that they are doing surgery to make him feel all better. If he's having issues swallowing, which I'd imagine he is   let him know he'll never have that same problem after the doctors fix him up.
That's just guessing at what you should say though, I don't have kids yet. Lol.
