Public Service Announcement - funky name spellings

Changing the spelling of a name to make it "uneek" doesn't have the effect you want it to.

If the name is pronounced in the traditional fashion, and the only change you make is the spelling, your child's name is only "uneek" on paper. To anyone who hears or says it, it is indistinguishable from any other spelling of the same name. It is only if someone reads the name that they realize it is "different", and the difference gets lost the moment the name is spoken aloud.

All you do when you give a child a wacky spelling of a name just to make the name "uneek" is confuse anyone who reads the name and complicate the life of the child. If you really want a unique name, find one.

Mahrieeaghn is still, when heard, Maryann
Sewfeeyah is still, when heard, Sophia
Mychale is still, when heard, Michael

Dig?

Stop doing this, please. If you want the name to stand out, pick one that stands out when heard, not just on paper.

I can't believe the number of women who do this, though.

Even after everyone tells them it's awful they STILL do it.

I always wonder how they are going to teach their child to spell. Tell them "Mommy spelled your name wrong to be cute but you really spell like this okay?"

Spelling it with a K, does not tell people that its supposed to be pronounced "KAY-lum", instead of "cal-um".

Theyre going to say it "cal-um", and just assume its another idiot who thought it was cute to replace a "C" with a "K".
