Vagus Nerve Stimulator, bad side effect?

posted 29th May '12
**Trying to type this with an almost 3 yr old hitting the keyboard on me, please overlook spelling mistakes**

May 15th my son went in for a VNS device implant.
(Its like a pacemaker for the brain, it shockes the vagus nerve, in an attempt to shock the brain out of giving off discharges, the discharges cause seizures.)

so the 1.5 hour surgery ended up taking 3 hours. no one came out to tell me why the surgery time doubled.
then we find out he's allergic to morphine.
and now he has a droopy eye, the same side the surgery was done on (left)

i'm just beyond pissed. Dr Hader is a world renown neurosurgeon. Why the hell happened to my baby in there.

I was told that fluid collect during surgery, which i know to be true, but they had him laying the the other side of his body.. how can fluid collect up? i was told to basically watch, and was assured that with benadryl it would go down.

Well its been too weeks, its still there.
i did some research on the web, and have come across several reported accounts of this "Horners syndrome"

So naturally i called my neurologist nurse, to make the 2 week appointment for the machine to be turned on. I brought this up to her, and she snapped into defensive mode "i've never heard of this happening here" (yes nice choice of words, i know)

Either way, what do i do? contact another neurologist?
or print off articles of this happening as proof that it can happen?
does anyone know where i stand legally with this issue? (i live in Alberta)

please please please help.

I would see if you can get in for an emergency consult with another neurologist, but I'm in the states, and don't know how the system works in alberta.

So i spoke with the neurosurgeon.
the condition is called Horners syndrome, happens in 1 out of 20 VNS implants.

6-12 weeks for it to go away, if it doesnt by then, then its permanent
