Press one for English
posted 3rd May
OK, I've been thinking about something.
I frequently, and I mean frequently, see people complaining about having to "press one for English" when calling a company, and blaming it on immigrants.
My question is, do you really think that if there were no Spanish speaking people that the automated phone systems would disappear? You'll still have to go through 3,432 other steps before you can reach a human being. Does that one extra step, selecting English, really make it that much more of a hassle? Really?
I don't think so.
I can't imagine that people genuinely have a problem with pressing one for English when they call a company.
Yes, I get that you don't like the influx of Spanish speakers, but do you really honestly equate these automated phone systems with the fact that some people in the U.S.A. speak Spanish? They'd exist no matter what.
Honestly, if you want to bitch about immigration (legal or illegal, whatever floats your proverbial boat), do so, but bitching about having to "press one for English" is about the weakest, lamest argument in the arsenal.

HOnestly, I dislike it (not HATE it) because I have no use for it, therefore is one less button needing to be pressed. I'm lazy like that.

Hahaha, In Canada, we also have to "press one for English" but we're understandable about it because about30% of Canadians speak French!

It doesn't really bother me. I'm way lazy though so I would be happier if I had one less button to push, haha.

I've never even thought about it. I don't think theres a problem with it, it takes what 2 seconds out of your time. Even if your a legal immigrant that doesn't mean your fluent in english. Besides it would tie up the lines with people struggling to communicate and then people would bitch about that. It's a courtsey to everyone.

usually you can bypass all of the options and just press "0" to talk to a person LOL I used to work for Ticketmaster as a telephone sales rep, and that's what our system was set up to do! (We didn't let people know that secret though )

Yeah that's true. Pressing one for english isn't really that hard. I don't understand why people would bitch about it because you still have to press a million other buttons to get to where you are going anyways, so why bitch about pressing 1 for english...

I don't really mind but I know some people that it drives crazy. This is THEIR reasoning...not mine!
They are in our country. They should have to learn English and if not then THEY should have to push X for Spanish.
I have no idea what it bothers them so bad.

My problem is.. When I press 1 for English.. I expect someone to SPEAK english on the other line.
I get so sick of getting people on the phone with extremely Heavy accents and I can barely understand them...
That's my pet peeve.

I'm not for sure on this but I don't think America has an "official" language. I dunno, I don't get why it bothers people either.

My mom was one of those people who felt that people who come to this country should have to speak English until I explained to her that not everyone who is here and doesn't speak English is here illegally... I can somewhat understand her frustrations with illegal immigration and the problems it causes for tax paying citizens, but she knows what it's like to be in a foreign country and not speak the language... she's spent 30 years in the Air Force! And she was in all of those countries legally... same with myself... I have played basketball overseas in non english-speaking countries, and was there legally, but only knew a little bit of the language... people shouldn't be so quick to judge and jump to conclusions!!!
