I cross my 7's and Z's as well. I picked it up in high school when I was in Germany for a semester. And I write "theatre", not "theater".

Thanks Tid for the info on our non-official language! I didn't know that either! I'm totally fine with us having English and Spanish signs all over the place. I've been speaking conversational Spanish since grade school, but I'm not that up on it, so anytime I read a sign that has dual languages, I feel like its my own personal little language lesson. Why people get so up in arms about it is beyond me...

Well, one part that bugs me is that it costs money to make 2 of every piece of literature that the government has to put out. It also costs money for schools to hire translators because there are so many chilldren (illegal or not) who don't know English. That's our tax dollars.

They do it out of choice, not out of obligation. Private companies do it because the money they would spend on it comes out of the profits that segment of society gives them. The government does it because they have this crazy idea that everybody that resides here should participate in their services and pay their taxes and comply with their rules, no doubt to save money instead of spending it. Government waste is rampant, but I think I'd turn my eyes toward corrupt war contractors and tax breaks to oil companies pulling record profits rather than printing a voter registration card in Spanish.

As far as kids that can't speak English, don't worry about the kids. The kids are fine. By the end of the first year here, they'll be functionally bilingual. By graduation, they'll be completely bilingual (and at an advantage in the job market for the profit/inclusiveness thing I mentioned above) . They'll be Americanized in no time, and within three generations, won't speak any of that diabolical mother tongue at all.

At the end of the day, the businesses and the government of the United States is a bunch of greedy-ass corporate capitalists, and they're going to print stuff and record their IVRs in whatever language that has enough market share to maximize their profits. They're not doing it for some touchy-feely appease the brown people and piss off whitey PC shit. They're doing it for one color only - green.

How is spending twice as much on literature at the welfare office going to put more money in the pockets of the government? And how is forcing public schools (funded by the government) to hire translators make the government more money either? You're trying to divert attention by bringing up other ways the government wastes money.

I can see your argument for private companies, but not for the government-run agencies.

Why would that be funny? We're in America. Our country is being over-run with illegal immigrants taking money from our government programs, money that ismeant for the Americans citizens who actually contribute to the programs. Accomodating them in every little way is just more inticement to stay here illegally. Illegal immigrants is another reason hospital care is so high. They have to recup the money they lose treating ppl without insurance (I know some Americans don't have insurance either) from us who do have insurance. Sure, our insurance pays some for us but we just get premiums raised every year b/c of it.

Everything should be in English b/c in a lot of cities, counties, and states, they have made English their official Language. When we go to other coutries, we don't get the courtesy of them bending over backwards to accomodate our language.

If you're anaturalizedcitizenthat can't speak English, one of the conditions of becoming a naturalized American citizen is to learn English. While I understand that some children of legal immigrants can't speak spanish, it is they're parent's responsibility to teach them English b/c they are in America now.

If you're over here legally and you're not a citizen, then obviously you'll be going back to your country sooner or later (or at least you should be), so deal with our language while your over hear. We deal with trying to learn your language while we are in your country.

If you're here illegally, I have no sympathy for you just b/c you can't understand our language. Your breaking the law by being over here. When we break the law, we get citations, goto jail and to prison.

Come here legally, pay taxes, get health insurance, and learn English.
