re: Press one for English

posted 3rd May
What's the big freaking deal about pressing a button? It really doesn't get any simpler than that. Come on people.

Me too. Also, I don't care for the systems where you have to "say" your option into the phone. I don't like to talk on the phone as it is and when calling a credit card company only to have to say random words into the phone to get to who I want...that is annoying! I usually just stay silent until the system automatically connects me to someone who I can actually talk to.

I'd much rather press a button. lol

I don't think pressing an extra button is a big deal.

I think the problem that people have with it is that it's like saying we have 2 official languages in this country, which we don't. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Canada has 2 official languages, so over there, it wouldn't be a big deal.

I was at the doctor's office the other day and 95% of the signs are in English and Spanish. Then there was one sign that was EXCLUSIVELY SPANISH. I couldn't believe it. Unless that sign was saying, "Hey guys, this is America, learn some English," there would be no reason to have a sign in a doctor's office that is exclusively in Spanish.

As of right now, the United States has no "Official Language."

Canada recognizes English and French as official languages.

It's by no means without controversy, though. I personally can't be arsed to care, but there are many Canadians that view this similarly to the situation in the U.S.A.

Quebec (our French province) does not recognize English (for the most part) as an official language. The signs in Quebec are exclusively French, the last time I looked into it. In the rest of Canada, all signs are bilingual. There are a lot of Canadians who are angry that "we have to learn French and they don't have to learn English".

Well, I'll be damned. lol

The United States does not have an official language, but English is spoken by about 82% of the population as a native language. The variety of English spoken in the United States is known as American English; together with Canadian English it makes up the group of dialects known as North American English. 96% of the population of the U.S. speaks English "well" or "very well."[2]. On May 18, 2006, the Senate voted on an amendment to an immigration reform bill that would declare English the national language of the United States[3]. The immigration reform bill itself, S. 2611, was passed in the Senate on May 25, 2006, but expired when the Senate and the House of Representatives failed to agree upon the amendments in conference.

To me, the reason they haven't had to declare it the official language in the past is because it was just understood. It's kind of like how we don't have an official flag, it's just understood.

I go through phases where I cross my sevens and Zs.
