Does he have some sort of OCD?

posted 26th May '12
For awhile I've noticed my oldest- who is now 4 does some strange stuff, but not sure if it's just his age or what!
I'll try to make this short and not jumbled
One thing is he can remember EVERYTHING. Down to the color undershirt his nurse at his pedis office was wearing the last visit. He remembers where he put things (my daughter can't remember what she did 2 seconds ago). He remembers when he wore a certain outfit...things like that.

And the worst thing- he WILL NOT let me throw anything away. Literally- popsicle wrappers, paper plates, broken toys, old food ( he got a piece of watermelon at the grocery store the other day, was done with it, but wouldn't let me throw it away. a few days later- we got in the car- he looked where he'd hidden it- realized it was gone, and FREAKED out and CRIED)- NOTHING..he has started to hide things he thinks I might throw out. It's so strange to me- b/c it's not like we take anything like his toys or anything really. I don't want him to be a hoarder, but I'm sure this isn't normal. I don't understand why he has such attachment to things. Could this be because we moved from our home in texas to here? then almost 2 years later we moved from an apartment to a house?!
Anyone have any insight or if you think it's just a phase?

There are other things like how his socks have to be (but I'm the same way), how you tie his shoe- things like that.

Ask your pediatrician about it! In fact, make an appointment (a double maybe), where you can leave him out in the waiting room with dad or someone while you go in and tell her/him your concerns, and then go out and get him (so you don't talk about it in front of him).

Sounds like an anxiety thing, maybe not OCD specifically but the holding on to things and having an emotional attachment to them is not normal....

My son is almost four and i haven't experienced this personally but i am currently working on a master's of psychology

That does seem a little strange to me but then again my son isn't 4 yet so I can't say what's "normal"

Honestly I think it can be a phase. I went through weird phases myself as a child.

When I was 6 I couldn't walk past a peice of garbage with having to pick it up and throw it out. Whether it be on the street, in school or where ever.
And if I walked past it, it would bother me so much I would have to turn around and get it

My daughter doesn't freak out about throwing things away but she does remember tiny details like your son... And she is very po ky about certain thing. Like her shoelaces have to lie a certain way, the lines on her socks have to be perfect, can't be a bump in her ponytail, etc. I'm hoping it's a phase.

I'd say the attachment to objects sounds like a phase. Maybe try explaining to him WHY things have to be thrown out. Like, "this wrapper will make bugs come into the house" etc

it seems to have gotten worse- it started with just the socks and shoe laces... I think I'll mention it at least and see what the pedi says..I just don't want him on meds kwim?

I was the same thing. I can still remember vivid details from when I was 2 and I am 29 now. I remember what I wore on the first day of kindergarten, smells, etc.

LOL...I mean I remember things from Kindergarten and stuff, but I don't think I remember details like he will...I don't know- I have a good memory but maybe he just pays better attention than me.
