Question about being induced

posted 2nd May
Okay so this is probably a stupid question BUT im being induced in the morning and when i called L&D to see what time i need to come in they just told me they would call me in the morning and give me an hour heads up. Thats it no directions/ special instructions or anything! So my question is am i supposed to not eat anything in the morning or stop eating and drink after a certain time tonight? this is my first baby so i have no idea what to expect really, i just dont want them to ask me if i ate breakfast and tell me to go home and re-schedule! haha Please help!

Every hospital is different. I would call your doctor and ask the office. Good luck

I don't think you are supposed to eat anything after midnight just in case they have to put you under for a c-section or something.

You NEED to eat and drink well before you get induced. It is SO important to have enough strength for labor. Dehydration can cause problems with your labor, ascan low blood sugar. Labor is hard work and takes a TON of calories, so you need to stay nourished and hydrated to give your body fuel for the job. It is so important! Going through labor is like playing two football games back to back, as far as energy expended, and your labor will be much quicker and more effecient if you are not exhausted from lack of food and dehydrated. If they have any reason to need to send you for a C-section, it will take hours of labor to determine that usually, and at that point they can restrict food, but if you are anticipating a normal labor and birth, you NEED to eat well. And drink lots of water.

I'm sure every hospital's policy is a little bit different, but I'm being induced on Wednesday at 6AMand I was told by my doctor not to eat OR drink anything past midnight the night before. I would give your doctor a call because he/she should be able to tell you what time they have you scheduled to come in and whether or not they allow food /drink.

I was induced - I had cervidil first and was allowed to eat anything I wanted. Then my doc said I could eat breakfast before I got the Pitocin. But after Pitocin started it was strictly ice chips and popsicles until after birth.

Same with me. I didn't have cervidil but I was induced with patocin. I was able to eat breakfast then after that I was on a strict liquid diet. For lunch I got some broth, jello, a popsicle, and a juice. I was starving!!! I suggest eating a very good breakfast.

Okay so i just called L&D back and asked them and you are totally right!! She pretty much said what you did WORD FOR WORD! She advised a light breakfast like cereal would probably being better than going to IHOP of Denny's on the way to the hospital!

Thanks for the wonderful advise!!

If they expect you not to eat or drink, then I'm sure they will provide glucose through your IV to keep your blood sugar up, but trying to labor and running out of energy because you haven't eaten is a recipe for "failure to progress" which generally leads to a C-section... so its kinda a contradiction. Dont eat anything incase we might have to do a c-section.... but if you dont have enough energy to labor because you havent eaten, we'll have to do a C-section! Silly...

I'm being induced in the morning too and my doctor said to eat and drink well and to have a filling bfast before going in because they're not going to feed me until after i give birth. Just not to have anything greasy.

I was in labor with my second and didn't know it, I thought it was braxton hicks, and made taco's for dinner. I was then hungry when I was in the hospital, and my fiance brought me some chocolate cakes... and as soon as I was about to open them, she goes ummm no chocolate for you, your in labor. I'd eat like yogurt or some scrabled eggs or something.
