How to go about getting an IEP

posted 21st May '12
My son was diagnosed with a speech delay after he turned 2. He's been in speech for about a year and a half now (he's 3). He started going to a preschool last August and has improved greatly but is still not quite where he needs to be. DH and I are looking into placing him in the public school system so he can be in an environment where they will focus on his special needs and not to mention the school he's in now is $600/month & we're faced with possibly pulling him out school for the summer because of the high cost. We've already applied for him to get evaluated by the public school system but haven't heard anything back. I called them about 2 weeks ago and the secretary said they have recieved his application but he doesn't have an appointment yet. has anyone in FL been through FDLRS with their child? I will try calling them again later today.

My twins were on an IEP. It was something the school done automatically after an evaluation. It just takes a while. They were never placed on one until they started public school. The private school they attended was very one on one and didn't like "labels". Theirs was due to speech issues.

You just have to ask for an IEP evaluation. Once you ask they are legally required to do an initial evaluation with 90 days. Then you will have a meeting to discuss the terms of the IEP (and add anything you want to add to it). From there- once it's in place you can request a meeting to have it changed as often as needed, or at least every 3 years.

My son has a speech delay also. I sent in the application in the beginning of April and still haven't heard anything. The last time I called they said they have recieved the application but due to the high volume of applications they have recieved they haven't been able to schedule us for an evaluation.

Who do I ask for an IEP? My son is currently in a private school pre-k program. I'm trying to get him into the public school prog or atleast get a scholarship

I know for a public school the quickest way for us was to ask the school psychologist.

My boys went to Catholic school but their speech therapy was done through the school SLP at the public grade school. I can't remember how we went about getting that set up though. I think maybe their pediatrician helped us with getting it set up. Their speech delay was due to them being severely tounge tied.
