There's a huge range, and the symptoms tend to vary greatly.

Everyone is different. Some are higher functioning, others aren't. It can do a lot.

Well.

Many tend to have difficulty in social situations, they don't usually interact in the same way other kids do (though some are higher functioning in this area, which is why I'm hesitant to say that it's across the board).

But, I think that's the most common, or the most known quality of autism.

there aren't really "main" ones
autism is a spectrum of disorders which includes social and development delays, self stimulatory behavior

it might be easier for you to google symptoms of autism

Next year they will chage the DSMV and that will change all of this info making it one lump category but with functioning levels...

As of now it's

Aspergers = no speech language delay.

Classic autism which there are 3 categories needed for diagnosis (need 6 markers 2 social and 1-communication 1 behavioral and 2 more can fall anywhere... This doesn't tell you the severity of symptoms just the #
Social
Communication
Behavioral

PDD-NOS
only need 4 markers 2 have to be social and the other two could be anywhere

Fragile X

I have a link that explains it a little better

Now once you determine the # of markers and correct diagnosis you can figure out functioning level

Like my son has classic autism. He has 8 markers. He is very high functioning has a large vocabulary and high IQ. He struggles with eye contact, and pragmatic speech meaning he only Carrys on one sided conversations as long as he is leading hell talk to you all day, he can anwser test/fact questions but just social chit chat he struggles with. He doesn't care for kids. Or playing/pretending. he's pretty stimmy and flaps/jumps a lot...

His friend in school also has classic autism, has 8 markers. Has a lower vocabulary but better conversation skills, his academic skills are rather low, he is hyper social, has no boundaries, gets to close, doesn't know when people are not wanting to play etc...

I have 3 autistic boys (bloodwork is in to check for Fragile X). Each of them is SO unique! I will tell you about MY BOYS symptoms so you can see how they can vary;
Joel~ (8-1/2 now)Non verbal until 3-1/2. Extreme hand eye coordination. Obsesses over wheels, spinning, shapes. Lines things up. Has a VERY rigid schedul. Sensitive to lights, sounds, smells and textures (severely so). He flaps his arms and rocks. He cannot use the toilet. Has poor hygene. Has constant meltdowns, public or home doesn't matter. He cannot read facial cues, he get horrifically bullied. He cannot tell emotions (cannot understand he is loved). Struggles acedemically. Cannot carry on a conversation. Does not sleep. ADHD
Hayden (now6)~ VERY early mobility. Walking at 8 months. Knew his WHOLE alphabet AND all the sounds by his first birthday. Sensitive to touch. Overly sensitive emotions. Rude. Loud. Aggressive. Defiant. Very artistic. Can draw better than my 10 year old daughter (who takes lessons!) Taught himself to read a week after he turned 3. Is currently doing 4-5 grade work in kindergarten, all subjects. Obesses about EVERYTHING. Wrinkles in clothes, sheet, etc are a no-no! Socks will never be worn. Socially awkward. Kids feel intimidated by him. Sleeps well. Thinks he is the most amazing kid in the world (he is<3). Was recently diagnosed with Aspergers, Severe OCD, Palillalia, and hyperkinetic ADHD.
Tommy (3 years old)~ Wanders (look up autistic elopement). Police pressed charges against my hubs and I because he wandered away. Case was dropped. Has sensory issues with lights, sounds, textures. At nearly 4 he weighs 30 lbs because he WON'T eat meats or sweets. Hates clothing. Didn't speak until about 8 months ago. Very obessed with textures. Smears poop everywhere. Cannot brush his teeth (amazing has no cavities though!). Terrified of vehicles. NO fear of people...will walk away with anybody that knows his name. Doesn't learn well. Cannot sing the ABCs or do his colors. Cannot control his sensory overload at the market (screams and cries...yep, he's THAT kid). Cannot sleep with out mommy. Overly attached to me....nobody else, not even daddy. Night terrors frequently. Afraid of wind, bugs (especially flies and ants). Obsessive about schedule. ADHD.
So you see...they all vary greatly on the spectrum. Written on here is sounds like I am living with monsters, but I'm not. They are the most amazing kiddos in the world. Autism is their diagnosis....but not my kid. People just have to look harder to see them in there. I can honestly say that I would NEVER change who they are. I have learned so much about people nd the world through my amazing kids.
Sorry this is SO long, but it doesn't even hit the tip of the iceburg
