Lead poisoning

posted 19th May '12
My sister got a letter from the WIC office this week and it stated that her son tested positive for lead poisoning. His levels were 15.0. They want him to return to their office for another set of tests and from there I don't know what will happen. there are only a few homes he has gone to (mine, my parents, a friend's, his own and occasionally to his step grandma's) out of those places my parents home, which was built in the early 1900's, the friend's and my house would be the likely source for the lead. what can I do to get paint tested for it and if it is my home that has the lead poisoning in it, will my landlord be responsible for any damages?

If you're renting and your building was built before 1978, they are supposed to do a lead based paint disclosure and let you know of the status.

Do you know when your property was built?

Quoting The Doctor:" "
no idea, my landlord never discussed that with us. they did some home repairs before we moved in and never finished them so one of the walls (the laundry room) has paint and it has been in terrible shape since day 1 of moving in. new dry wall was put up, but it isn't in the best shape..the people who done them were as dumb as a doorknob.. it was never painted..insulation is exposed, wires aren't covered, floors aren't done..it's horrible. the thing is we have to be out of here in 2 weeks because someone else is moving in and we have to swipe houses with them...

You can go to hardware stores and get lead test sticks. They're about $20 for 3-4. A little fluid goes onto the surface you are testing, rub it in a little bit and then watch for a color change on the tip of the stick. Pink usually means lead, yellow is negative.

Hmm.

You can look up when your building was built at the Housing Authority. Private landlord? I think they may have different rules than a complex.
