My Preemie screams when i put her in her crib!!!!

posted 17th May '12
So my daughter was born at 25 weeks and 2 days gestation. She's finally home and has been for about 2 weeks now. She is 3 3/4th months old and a little over a week adjusted. She has issues with Horrible re-flux which she is prescribed Zantac for and it doesnt seem like it is doing much for her even with the dosage having been up'd. She is on Oxygen and an Apnea Monitor. Just for a little history on her. It seems like...no matter how long i sit with her that she has fallen asleep, the second i lay her in her crib she either re-fluxes or grexes and screams. But if i lay her in My bed with me she will fall asleep no problem. I don't like having her in my bed with me at night because of the possibility of me falling asleep but it seems like the only way is if i lay with her for an hour or so then put her in her crib that she will (maybe) stay sleeping. Has anyone have a micro preemie that has delt with sleeping issues and re-flux that has any advise?

Do you swaddle her? My son didn't like his crib at first because it was so big and open, but would sleep between Dh and I in our bed. For a while we removed the straps in his car seat and put him to sleep there. At 6 weeks he was finally sleeping in his bassinet no problem.

Co-sleeping is very safe when done properly. If she sleeps best with you, I'd suggest looking into co-sleeping. Or get a sleeper that connects to the side of the bed. There are a lot of resources out there on how to do it safely:

It's probably because she feels comforted with you OP

They also have a co-sleeper at Babies r us that you put on the bed with you. I wish I could convince DH to do that.

My daughter was a week late and would act that way, a lot of babies only sleep on or near mommy. Its a comfort thing. We are still co-sleeping, she is still breastfed to bed at night and she just turned 2.

My preemie was the same (minus reflux) it was because he preferred to be held. I lived with it until he was about 6mnths then I did the tough love, because I needed sleep! All I can suggest is if its not due to her reflux when you put her to bed DON"T pick her up again pat her backside, resettle her blanket, even change her nappy in there if its sleep time. It took about 3 - 4 nights solid of this to get my son to settle, with the frequency decreasing. I think within a couple of weeks he was going down and sleeping well.
Good luck with everything.
BTW my son was born at 27 weeks, IUGR and on home oxygen until about 14 mnths.

I dont have her mattress elevated, but i have been considering it. They did that with her in the NICU. I do swaddle her, But she pushes her arms free and hates being restrained. I made her a little "nest" i guess you can call it. It's kind of like what they do in the NICU with the little supporter that goes around them so they feel less open and more snuggled. She likes that when she does finally fall asleep. I've tried the swing, her seat, swaddling her and rocking her..the only thing she likes is being in my bed lol.

I co-slept with LO until she was almost 1. It was wonderful for both me and her. We both slept better and felt more relaxed at night.

I found the co-sleepers for in the bed here, im going to look into them. It seems like we both sleep better together even though i have her crib right next to the bed.   Thankyou all for the suggestion. Seems like a nice idea...and very comforting! She had a rough start to life so i don't blame her for wanting mommy so much haha!

My daughter can't sleep flat due to her reflux. My mom bought her a sit-n-play made by fisher price. That is what she sleeps in. She too doesn't like to be swaddled. It is elevated enough to keep her reflux from being a problem and she sleeps so I can too. Hope this helps.

OP I hope she feels better   My preemie HAD to sleep in her own bed. Her reflux was so bad that we had to swaddle her tight and lay her in the boppy to sleep. And even then she woke up every hour screaming.
We didn't get more than 3 hours of sleep until she was around 4 months old.
But if it makes you feel any better she is 1 now and is doing great! She still has some problems but is pretty much a normal toddler now

Good luck to you!
