Got a question for breastfeeding moms...

posted 1st May
I'm planning on breastfeeding my son for at least 4 months. But come January of next year - I'm going to be heading back to school...and my mom is concerned that she won't be able to give him ample amounts of breastmilk that I have pumped because she won't know how much he needs or how to warm it up after it's been in the fridge.

Can any of you mommies help me out!? If everything works out and he takes to breastfeeding, will I be able to pump milk for him that my mother, or any babysitter, could feed him?

She's really worried she won't have any idea. Can you help out?

I go to school and breastfeed!
It's kind of just trial and error on what amount they'll take out of a bottle - you'll figure it out though.
Start pumping and storing breastmilk in the freezer as soon as you can so you have a lot and just go from there...
as long as you keep pumping, there will be enough!
as for warming it up, you just run the bottle under warm water =]

she just needs to heat it up in warm water... you can freeze it.
dont microwave it though!!
and yes you can pump it once you have established your supply...i nannied for a lady that was a nurse and worked 12 hour shifts, and she'd pump and we always had enough...
i am breastfeeding now with my son but he is only 2 wks old and havent pumped anything yet because i want to establish my supply first, idk if thats right but thats what my friend who has been breastfeeding for 10 months said.

hope i could help you out some

You will need to be sure to build up your supply by allowing him to nurse often and pumping between feedings, but yes (barring any difficulties or problems) you should be able to supply ample pumped milk for your mom to feed him during the day. Breastmilk is simple to heat - fill a large mug with hot water, and place the bag of milk into the mug for 45-60 seconds. It warms quickly and you don't run the risk of burning your baby this way. You then pour the bag into the bottle, and that's it! HTH!

This link also tells you when to save it or dump it after you've stored/pumped milk. http://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/T026900.asp
