My mom used gerber prefolds, rubber pants and pins for 6/7 kids. That is what I started with with my first daughter, but she started to get bad rashes, so I quit cloth diapering.

Thankfully, this time I know that there is MUCH more to it these days

Yeah they can be really expensive. Most of the one's I've bought are around 10$, but I do have a few that were in the $30's.
They also re-sell quite well (hard to find prints of certain brands can go for a few HUNDRED dollars).

We used disposables with my first, and didn't switch to cloth with my second until she was about 7-8months old, but I wish we would have done it from birth.
No nasty chemicals on her butt, way better for the environment (since the disposables will never break down. They need sunlight and air for that, which they do not get sitting down in a landfill).

And they're super cute. ^_^

the initial cost can seem big for cloth diapers, but because you can reuse them, you do end up saving up to thousands of dollars in the end.

And if you just use prefolds and cute covers you'll save A LOT more.

Open diaper, dump poop into toilet (which you should technically be doing with disposables as well. The disposable diaper companies recommend it).
Sometimes I might need to swish the diaper is water (though they make sprayers that attach to your toilet so you don't have to swish) pull out the insert (if it has one) and toss in the pail.
On wash day throw in the washer, totally not gross at all.

Cloth diapers have never had to be hand washed. Well, maybe before washing machines were invented, lol. Even my grandma didn't hand wash hers.

well my mother used cloth diapers and she had to hand was so it did happen lol

not saying it didn't happen, just that they didnt HAVE to be handwashed

only have to hand wash if you don't have a washing machine or don't have access to one. and in that case, I'd use disposables too. Actually, they have something called a "diaper service" that will pick up your diapers, wash them and give you fresh ones .. I've heard of that .. but not sure how cost effective it is then.

I know this post is old, but does anyone realize shes from south africa?
