nightmare nurse

posted 14th May '12
I recently had a horrible experience with a nurse. My baby is on monitors for his heart and one because he has apnea. His heart rate drops and he stops breathing. She shut off his alarms so that should he desat as they call it or his heart rate drop the alrams would not go off. Also she kept trying to get me to leave and would tell me he did not need his diaper changed. Finally i checked him even after being told i should leave him alone because he was resting. His diaper was hanging off him and he had defecated all over his bed which he was laying in it was even on his arms. Also he had spit up and it was all over his face neck and chest. I cleaned him up and then convinced her to let me hold him. i felt horrible for leaving him for a few minutes with this woman. She agreed to let me hold him and told me i could not get him out myself. She then proceeded to pick my baby boy up by only the back of his neck in order to hand him to me causing his heart rate to dip to the sixties. At this point i lost my temper and took him from her and began crying and told her to get out. I sat there holding my baby boy and not leaving until she left for the night i then reported her to the head nurse.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had any bad experiences like mine and what u all would have done in my position. I felt like such a horrible mother for not protecting him and i wanted to literally rip her throat out.

OMG, I would have shot her then and there.

I had a bad experience with the night nurse gavage feeding my preemie when she didn't need it. She wouldn't follow my wishes so I told the charge nurse that that nurse was never to be assigned my child again then went on to file a written complaint with the director of the hospital.

i had no idea who to tell and i was scared to leave LO with her long enough to talk to anyone so i waited until another nurse was caring for him

sounds like she needs a new profession! im so sorry you had to go through that mama! your poor baby. I would have reported her right in front of her face and i don't think i could have kept my mouth shut if she was mistreating him that badly. think about all the other babies she is probably treating the same way. Its people like her that make me sick. My DD was in the nicu three months but thank the lord i loved all her nurses. Again im terribly sorry. I would try to get her license taken away.

You can ask that she not ever be allowed to watch your child again..and you should file a report so she cant even work with other kids..turning off monitors is never allowed without charge nurses approval.. so if she did that right in front of you..imagine what she.does when noone is looking

what would she have done if one of the babies died? can she get sued for that for being intentionally careless?

that is exactly what scared me the most the thought of what she would do when i was not there. I did talk to one of the charge nurses and i have not seen her in the nicu since. The sad part is she told me she has been a nurse for thirty years. This shocked me. It also has made me more wary of all the nurses. i literally was seeing red when i realized his monitors had been turned off and that was before all the other stuff thats why i checked him after she said he was fine to leave him alone so he could rest. I wanted to call her every name imaginable when i discovered the mess he was layin in and then to pick my sweet littly guy up like that ugh. I am normally so shy but i told her to get out. i just held him and cried. i hated her. It made me feel helpless really. should she not have been caught doing that stuff before

I would have told my case manager and requested to not have her assigned to my child. We were blessed with great nicu nurses most of the time. The two I had a problem with were not nearly as bad as the one you described. The first was during the day, I just made sure I did his care 15min earlier then schedruled so by the time the nurse check his lungs and leave. We had a night nurse that when ever she walked into the room Joshua would start to cry. After two hours I said the hell with that and held him the entire night. She kept telling me to put him down and get some sleep and she would take care of him. I just told her thank you, and I would if I was too tired.

my nurse for my 27 weeker was the same!! she would carry my son lke he was a puppy or something!! destat is when oxygen levels go down. and that is WAY more dangerous than heartrate going down. baby can turn blue if he destats....lots of nicu nurses just are so immune to any of suffering our babies go through its ridiculous! i reported my nurse to the charge nurse and he was moved into another section! thank goodness

wow that is horrible. one of the nurses kept making my son cry in order to latch him for breastfeeding, i was upset by it because i knew she didn't need to make him cry to latch. the next day i found out she isn't usually a nicu nurse, she was called in due to somebody calling in sick.

I called the nurse manager when I was not happy with the nursing care my son was receiving in the NICU. I felt like none of his nurses communicated important info during report. When I went to see him on day 5 of his stay his nurse knew nothing about him (feedings, changing, lab reports).

I'm a nurse and had no problem calling the nurse manager to request this nurse never be assigned to him ever again.

It solved the problem.

When our daight was moved to a new room we had a nurse that right away we did not like. I stayed with dd and spoke with the charge Nurse letting her know and requesting that DD never have this nurse again. I would have gone ballistic!
Hugs mama, pick primary nurses for your LO. You need To pick more than 1 primary to cover day and night etc don't let any nurse intimidate you. You have rights to help care for your baby. Her behavior was absolutely unexceptable.

I had one bad nurse while my son was in NICU and of course she was there on the day that I had to leave him (well when I had to leave the hospital and not sit there with him which I had done for nearly 72 hours). She told me I was not allowed to hold my son and I broke down cyring. My fav nurse came over to ask what was wrong and when I explained the situation she called over the doctor to correct the other nurse. From then on out the nurses we're great..the other familys not so much (shooo) but my nurses I loved. I had a couple that made my son things all the time to put on his pin up board and made my ex a fathers day card. They we're great :} Also I never seen the bad nurse again, I'm fairly sure thats because my fav nurse made sure of that for me.
