what to wear in labor

posted 30th Apr
I'm going to have my baby boy in a birthing center, so it is very unlike a hospital. Although they provide hospital gowns if you want them, I was wondering if anyone knew of any other options of what to wear during labor. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on something since it will probably be ruined. I want it to be comfortable and accessable!

In that case I would buy a very comfy sports bra and that's probably all I would wear. They give you blankets tocover yourself right? Everthing else tends to get in the way. I'm stuck wearing the big gown!

Maybe your housecoat or a a coverup that you don't mind perhaps parting with if you have to and slippers or cozy socks with some kind of tread on the bottom to keep your toes warm and so you don't slip on the floor. Definately a sports bra that you can also wear in the shower and have some modisty.

Why bother buying something that's going to get ruined then? If they provide something, then wear that. Buy a nice nightgown to wear afterwards instead.

Yes, I was wondering about that too.....until labor came.It was certainly the last damn thing I thought about. It will be quite distant when the time comes. I was on the phone with my mom letting her know we were on our way, and here comes the husband going, what do you want to wear? (I sleep nakie and had told him to grab me some clothes) My exact words "You really think I give a fuck?????!!! Hand me some damn sweatpants and tshirt, shit!"

I had a water birth at a birthing center, and I just wore my bikini top through labor. Alot of it wasnt in the water, but I got in and out, so it was nice that it was swimsuit material and dried really fast when I was out of the water. I think a comfy sports bra would be a great choice, that way it wont get blood and fluids on it, but you can still be covered for pictures and stuff... if you take any. I assist at births in a birthing center, and truthfully most of the women are completely naked. They dont care a bit. Once you're in labor, clothes are the last thing on your mind, but I had someone taking video an pictures throughout the labor, so I wanted my breasts covered at least. It worked out great for me!

Does a water birth really help with the pain? I've been seriously thinking about it, but haven't talked to anyone that has had one.

Yes.   I loved my water birth! The best thing was it really allows you to relax completely, and the more relaxed you can be, the less your contractions will hurt! It supports you and you are buoyant, so you dont have to have the pressure of your body on the bed, and you can stay in a more upright position but still be completely relaxed. It also lets you change position MUCH easier, as you are floating in there. The other great things are it helps reduce the risk of tearing, once again taking the pressure off your tailbone, as well as warming and softening your tissues so they stretch better. I had an 8lb 3oz baby girl and didnt tear at all! I would highly reccomend a water birth to anyone who is interested in one!

I'm doing the water birth too. And this is my second baby so I'm all about documenting everything and doing it all right! I want something nice-ish to wear for pictures during labor and just because it will make me feel better. I will probably just do the sports bra for in the bath, but I don't plan on spending the whole time there. They let you walk around outside and such and I want something that I can wear around!

I just put a bathrobe on when I was up and around, and it comes off easily later on. Good luck!

Was this your first baby? I'm just wondering how it compares to other methods. This is my third (2nd little one didn't make it) and I am really nervous about that and not having pain meds because my tailbone broke with my daughter (I have a flat sacrum) and it's highly likely it will happen again. I don't know if I can take the pain of that PLUS delivering!
