My best friends cousin is on methadone for her MS. She was on it while she was pregnant and her baby her baby was in the nicu for 5 weeks being weaned off of the methadone. I don't know what it did for her pain as she had a c-section because of her MS

It would of course be better for the baby if there was no methadone in the mother's system. I am not sure how it would effect the mother's pain or a c-section. I know several women who have delivered on methadone. One who was only on a very low dose of methadone and she nor her baby had any trouble at all. The pain medications the hospital gave her after her c-section were enough, and I think she didnt take anything after the first day. I also know another girl who was on a much higher dose and her baby (who was 2 days past due) spent 2 weeks in the NICU on medications to keep him from going into severe withdrawls and to get him to feed well. He is now healthy; and while the mom had a natural delivery she didn't seem to be in a great deal of pain. They had to fly her baby out to another hospital and they released her about 3 hours after she delivered so she could travel to be with him at the NICU. SO I suppose it could go either way, and mostly depends on the dosage the mother is on.

The girl on the low dosage was on 30 mg (is mg what it comes in?) and about the high dosage with the other girl....I am not sure about her dosage. She got pregnant by my cousin and so that is how I even know about it! His mom told us about the baby and getting flown out, and then the mom said it was because she was on methadone. I wish I could offer more on that situation and the dosage, but that is really all I know.

The girl who was on 30 was a family member and so I know with 100% certianty that was her dosage. Her baby was GREAT and she done GREAT after the surgery. I hope this helps you some. If this is for you or a friend then be sure you talk to your Dr. about it. They will be honest with you and will tell you what would be best for you and the baby. They should not judge either because at least there is concern for how it will effect surgery and the baby.

I'm a certified methadone advocate and in order to become certified I had to pass a test on all the facts, myths, federal and state laws, history of methadone and everything in between. I have an entire presentation with the exact facts which would probably be more convincing to you I'm sure BUT my 9 mo old sons asleep on my lap and I'm not getting up. I also delivered on methadone which I was on for 4 months before delivery to combat my opiate addiction. Jasper was in NICU 6 weeks but he never had severe withdrawl, they just had to keep him to make sure he didn't start to. It doesn't matter what dose the mothers on, it could be as low as 5 or as high as 120, it all depends on baby and whether or not he was absorbing the medication being passed through your placenta. Unfortunately, most babies including mine, suffer acute withdrawl and need to be weened off methadone with either the same or morphine. But I promise you the level dose youre on does NOT matter. A friend of mine was on 45 mg daily and her bby only spent three days hospitalized.

Hope this was a help. And don't be ashamed of delivering this way, besides fhe withdrawl which CAN be treated and isn't lethal, there's no harmful side effects and babies born to neonatal abstinence syndrome are NOT considers addicts because there's many behavioral traits one must have to be an addict, therefore babies can NOT BE BORN ADDICTS.

The best thing to do, no matter what your dose, is to maintain the same dose throughout the pregnancy. Of course, unless, you feel that you need more. I am experiencing my second birth on methadone, and my first child was weaned in three weeks. Remember, if you dont feel you need to up your dose, speak up. With my first child, i allowed them to increase me 50 mg so total i was on 150. my son would have been out of the nicu much sooner, had i maintained my dose. Also, i had a csection the first time, and i am having another c section this time as well. Both breech. Dont let any uneducated people on here say anything negative to you about being on methadone while pregnant. Most people are unaware that its illegal to stop taking methadone while pregnant (if you are on a program) the dangers that come along with the withdrawl can be fatal to your child. Its a very hard thing to go through, one of the toughest experiences i have ever had, but my son is a very healthy, happy 2 year old today.
