Iron Supplements for babies who are on whole milk?

posted 30th Apr
i have a book that says you can start weaning your baby off formula and/or breast at 9 months, But it also says you can only do that if he/she is eating enough iron rich foods ie(iron fortified cereal, meats and alternitives). Now my question is can you give them supplements if they arnt eating enough iron rich foods? Did you give your baby iron supplements when they switched to whole milk or did you doctor reccomend it???

I kept my daughter on formul til 1 year and plan to do the same with my son. My niece on the other hand has been on whole milk since she was 7 months old (long story and big argument with SIL) her peditrician didn't agree with giving babies whole milk or anything other than formula or breast milk til1 year but said if they weren't going to follow his advice on that they at least needed to give her vitamins. She takes Enfamil Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron Drops (I full dropper once a day) everyday and seems to be doing fine. We got them for her at our local Wal*Mart Supercenter in the vitamins and supplements section. They smell and taste horrid but if you can't get your little bean to take them I would recommend putting it in the milk once a day. I did this with my daughter because she was anemic after the switch to milk and eventually she wouldn't fight me and just drank it.

Good Luck, Hope this helps

definitly helps, i researched a little bit and found lots of different iron rich food, he is supposed to eat them with foods that are high in Vit C so it is absorbed better. And iron fortified cereal works just as well so in the next week we'l start with one oz of whole milk in his formula and move it up weekly   thanks for your help though!! Im still going to talk to my FD about supplementing and im going to have him checked for anemia. Just be be sure
