Can some one please help?!

This is pretty weird... at least to us. I went to my doctor 2 weeks ago and he did the u/s HIMSELF. He did a transvaginal because I'm high risk and he wanted to check my cervix for himself. During the u/s he said that we are having a boy. When we asked him how sure he was he said he was VERY sure. Well... I went back in today and he wasn't acting normal at all. I'm now 2 days shy of being 17 weeks by the way. He was using the doppler to check the baby’s heart and he said "so... does that sound like a boy or girl to you?" I looked at him in a puzzled way and said "um, I thought you said this was definitely a boy". He got a very nervous look on his face and said "ah... I'm just messing with you". We went on to talk about all of my current issues and then as I was getting ready to leave he said "ok I want you back in 1 week and we will do a full anatomy scan and find out for sure if this is a boy or girl". I got to the front and they said he was booked solid the next week and I would have to wait 1 1/2 weeks and then I found out he asked for the u/s tech to do my next u/s. That's strange for him because from what I've heard he always does them himself and he always has with me. I got home and was looking at u/s pics. online and my boyfriend and I decided that maybe he was acting so strange because he isn't so sure this is really a little boy. The u/s pics. online that are of girls look similar to the pics. we have here at home. So I was just wondering what you all thought and if it's normal for a doctor to do the u/s himself? And is he even really qualified to tell the gender of the baby? Or would only the u/s tech REALLY know "for sure"? Thanks for taking the time to read this. -A-

It sounds like the first scan was at 15 weeks, is that right?

It is difficult to be 100% sure of the gender at 15 weeks. The gender ultrasound place I went to wouldn't even let you schedule an appointment until at least 16 weeks. So your doctor probably just wants to double check.

I'm sure if your doctor is planning on doing the u/s that he is qualified to do so.

i'm sure your doctor is qualified to do the ultrasound himself. he may be confused by the heartrate, since that's when you said he reneged on his "boy" answer to begin with...bc a lot of times, a girl's heartrate is faster than a boy's...and he may be second guessing himself. do you have the ultrasound pics on here so you can post them? you might get more of an answer from that!

My doctor did the first u/s himself, just to get an accurate due date. He also did one other one the next appt. just because he couldn't find a heartbeat with the doppler. The major u/s (anatomy scan) was done at a radiology center though, and so were all the others that were checking on my low-lying placenta. So that part is normal. However, there is no way he could have told you (accurately) what the sex of your baby was that first time, it was way too soon. So I think that is a little strange. Same goes for the heartbeat, because that is not an accurate way to determine the gender either.

Personally I'd change doctors.

My doctor said even at 16 weeks its risky because at that point the parts are really swollen maybe it was just really swollen last time, but mine said boy at 16 weeks and for sure at 18 weeks

It sounds like you might have possibly had an ultrasound alittle bit too early. Sometimes its hard to tell around that time what the gender is.

As for me when I was pregnant my OB did the inital vaginal ultrasound and then for the anatomy scan she had me see another doctor that does them. That doctor strictly does the scans and the gender determination.

However, I would imagine your OB is qualified to do that also. Maybe he just wants you to see the tech because he is booked up?

Take care!

It would but the best pics of pics are without flash (make sure it still well lighted) and set up the pic and the camera on a solid surface where your not holding it so it doesnt get blurry and take the pic that way.

Yeah I would double check that definatly. It still could be a boy but sometimes those parts can be a little swollen looking that early. A boy you would have a turtle type look and a girl has the line in the middle. I think you were still a little early for him to tell you.

That U/S says you were 11 weeks 3 days, waaaay too early to tell. I don't think the genitals are formed that well at that time, that could have just been the cord or anything really.

WHOA!! I thought she said 15 weeks?!?! No way would they be able to tell at 11 weeks. Accourding to everything I have read the genitals arent even formed untill atleast 12 weeks and the earliest a u/s could tell you would be about 15 weeks and that even then it wasnt very accurate.

I guess I should add this... the doctor didn't even put my actual name into the u/s computer when he did the scan. So MY u/s pics. have some other girls name on there. But that is def. my baby and was done 2 weeks ago... and as I said before I'm about 2 days shy of 17 weeks. So that would have been about 15 weeks. Sorry, I should have added that. -Angela-
