What exactly does a helmet do?

posted 4th May '12
So my Godson is 3 months old a will soon be fitted for a helmet. He definately has a flat spot on the right side of his head. It is quite noticeable. Every since he was born he has favored that side.

I was just curious as to how the helmet shapes his head. Is there more pressure on one side than the other? Do they tighten it or something? I haven't had any experience with them and was just wondering how they worked.

My oldest son had one. It rounded out his head. Not perfect but a lot better than it was.

i think it stops the one side from getting all the pressure.
Even if he's asleep in the helmet...his head is not FLAT on the bed anymore..so his head can form to the helmet's shape.

My son slept all night from about a month or so old.
He had a MASSIVE flat spot on the back of his head...he's now almost 2 and the flat spot has gone mostly away on it's own. Just as "away" as it would have with a helmet...
I think they only give those helmets to people if the flat spot could interfere with brain growth.

Thanks. That makes sense.

It puts pressure on the pots that need it. babies heads shape really easily so its not alot of pressure. and the helmets are ugly, you can buy fabric to put over it so its not so boring. or use stickers. there are 2 different types. one looks like an actual helmet, and the other is kind of like a jock strap looking thing.

It holds their head where there is bulging or bossing and allows the spots where there is flatness to grow and fill in. My son has had his on for 3.5 months. His head is not perfect, but it's much better (it used to be a parallelogram shape).
