Military Ladies! DITY Move help

posted 1st May '12
If you went the DITY route, how was your experience?

-Which moving company did you rent a truck from (if you did)?
-How much of an $ advance did you get? (Just trying to get an idea. It's me, hubs, and DD)
-I believe you get 75% upfront the last 25% when you arrive. Right?

Any other suggestions or feedback would be appreciated too.

TIA

We were going to do a DITY move but I don't think they're worth it anymore with the price of gas... I guess that really depends on where you're going. But $4.00/gallon and 1,200 miles that get 10 MPG and hold 40 gallons? It would cost us $1,500 just to rent the truck.. so with the gas added in (around $500) that's $2,000... plus hotels, food etc etc. Pass! lol they can move my smurf for me... and when they break it, which they will, they can pay me back!

Ours will be about $1,200 with gas factored in. They will give an advance to cover renting the truck, moving materials, etc. And you get money up to 3 days for travel including money for food, lodging, and gas. I wish I could remember how much DH said, but I know we get extra for me and LO too. With Penske, they don't charge by the mile so we are only paying $353 and they give you 4 days to move on that price. There's a 10% discount for one way trips, and 10% discount for military. Then they have added insurance options to cover your property in the move too which is nice.

I just don't have the incentive to pack everything up and than move with two kids. I would lose my ever loving mind... especially because Liam would scream the ENTIRE way. I'm leaving him and Brookie in Texas with my parents and driving back with Roman in our car.

When do you guys get out? Our official date is December 30th but I'm moving to Texas 3 months early.

Luckily my dad and FIL are coming down to help. I'm pretty much in charge of cleaning while they load everything up. lol.

Andrew's terminal leave will start on May 15th. We will be outta here hopefully on the 16th if all goes right.

I wanted to go the TMO route and just have them do everything, but Andrew's early EAS papers got lost in his old shop and he had to start all over. His new EAS just got put in the system last week, when the moving process was supposed to be started a month in advance. I feel so smurfed right now. Now we don't know if we have enough time to get a moving date through them bc of only having about 2 weeks left

. He is going to see on Thursday, but if no date is available around when we are leaving, then we are going to do the DITY move as a last resort. Regardless my dad and FIL are coming down bc we have 2 cars to take back with us, and FIL hasn't been able to visit before. I'm so stressed with all of it, and I can't wait for it to be over!

It's such a bittersweet feeling. I'm so excited to move home, but I'm so worried that we are going to struggle really bad. I just keep telling myself that there are a lot of things that we miss out on living this military lifestyle that money can't buy which will make it worth it.

Andrew is going to do the Reserves so we can keep good insurance though, and he has a phone interview this week so hopefully that goes well. All fingers are crossed!

Roman wanted to... but inactive reserves is bad enough. I want to sever all ties with the military. This has been the most miserable four years of my life
