Projectile Vomiting

posted 29th Apr
My almost 3 month old son (actual age should have been almost 3 weeks) projectile vomits on a daily basis (comes out the nose). The doctor prescribed Zantac (.5 ML 3x a day) and it helps with the discomfort, but not the vomiting and told me to stop with my breastmilk and put him on Nutrimigen formula. We can not give him much food at a feed or else it comes right back up - this is especially tricky and stressful because he cries all the time as if he's starving. He does not want to take only 40 ML and wait twenty minutes for more. He gets so worked up that by the time he's gotten 90 ML, he's still screaming bloody murder and if we give him 10 more, we wear it and have to start over again. It takes hours to calm him...he started today at 10:30am and didnt relax until 9pm. He had a barium swallow done and they found nothing. Im at the end of my rope...they say this can last until he is sitting upright on his own. I dont know what to do and im getting desperate because I do not have time to give him all this attention because he has a twin brother that needs me too. Was wondering if anyone else is having similar situations and if so what your solution was...

there are some formulas that are anti-reflux (AR) formulas that may help.
there are also thickeners which you can add to some formulas to make them thicker(obviously) so that it sticks to bubs tummy better.... I would seek more Dr advice before changing him onto that tho. My son had Gasrtic reflux, silent with minimal projectile vomitting and we didnt know that is what it was until he was 9 weeks. He too was on Zantac but he was on1ml 15 mins before every feed which was increased as he grew and then weaned off at about 9 months.
Joel would scream for about 3 hours at a time and the only way to ease him was to sleep with him on my chest, him on his belly.
Try holding him in koala cuddle, his cheek in the small of your elbow and his nappy in your hand, like he is hugging your forearm.
Have you tried elevating his bedding.
We also got a walker so he could be upright when I had to do things like house work and a motion swing. the movement seemed to calm him a little.
I had him on his back as little as possible.
I also had a baby sling to carry him around when out at the shops rather than laying him in a pram....

Here is what Alex has tried for Formulas :

Similac Neosure
Similac Isomil (Soy)
Similac Alimentum (hypoallergenic)
Enfamil Nutrimigen (hypoallergenic)

None of these have really made a difference as far as the vomiting is concerned...in fact I think oddly enough the soy made him worse. I want to put him back on my breast milk because at this rate if he's going to vomit anyways he may as well try to keep down my milk since it is better for him.

We have tried the rice in the breastmilk/formula route. He still vomits...eats a little less, but can not keep it down. We really thought he had pyloric stenosis but they didnt see anything on the x-ray...wondering now if he just has the wrong dose of Zantac or needs something else with it because the Zantac does help...just not enough.

Sometimes he wants to be held and other times it seems to aggravate him if we lift him. His crib is raised...although he has been sleeping in an upright vibrate chair lately (without the vibrate motion on). I feel like Ive done everything advised and we are hitting a wall...im in process of getting him into a Pediatric Gastroentologist because my current Pedi doesnt seem to know what to do for him and is pretty much stopped helping us.

Its very depressing to see Alex so miserable every day...:

My son had some projectile vomiting problems as well but 3 formulas later and 2.5 months later he is doing good. How often during his feeding do you burp him. I noticed that burping him helped a lot, it cut back on even spit ups. He  still has some  good days and some bad days but no more projectile vomiting.
Also he had some reflux but that has gone down with the vomiting.

We burp him about every 20-30 ML of food.

It is encouraging to hear that your son got better....some days we swear it will never end!!
