I don't have a wandering child, and I don't have any advice on how to keep him from wandering. If it was me though, I'd probably install an alarm system in my house. You can set it to safety mode when you are sleeping. That way, if a door opens, the alarm will go off, so you'll be able to stop him from actually going anywhere. Good luck though, and I hope you get some helpful advice.

My son is not a toddler anymore but he has aspbergers. I don't know how to pm but if you would like to pm me feel free...he did go through this stage.

I guess my best advice is eye locks or bolt locks on the door....and even though it is scary to children you HAVE to tell children the complete truth about wandering and how dangerous it is! My son still will tend to wander....not at home but if he gets frustrated at school or if I running a few minutes late he gets scared and thinks I have left him. He has only scared me once when he was about 8...and I think the hurt he noticed that he thought was his "fault" hurt him he doesn't want to hurt mom. My husband installed two way lock doors on our side door and our basement door. Tomorrow, our contractor is coming over to install a high dead bolt in our front door that O will definitely not be able to reach. So I guess that covers a lot...I also got a magnetic alarm system thing for the front door, as well....as a back up in case we forget to lock the top deadbolt....

I guess, now we need to focus on windows....because pretty soon he's going to be going for the windows - once he figures out that he can't get out the doors....

unfortunately he's only almost 3. and his communication is extremely delayed....he doesn't understand the concept of danger...he also doesn't respond to pain...like, at all. So, I'm concerned if he hurt himself while he was outside, or fell, or got any scrapes playing with the bike....or, like, ate something. I just don't know!

I just feel like an awful mom.

Jamil just recently learned to open the door but hasn't left yet. I worked for several families who had runners. There are several kinds of locks that can be installed, unfortunately this is not an uncommon problem, and your ceriantly not the first this has happened to...

We have an alarm that beeps when any door or window in the house is opened (when the alarm is off) or the alarm goes off if it's set (he knows how to arm/disarm it though) but he can't turn the beep off...

We also have a high dead bolt on all the doors...

Mitch is a wanderer, well, was really badly. Luckily he's better now that he is older. I had him brought home to me once when he was about 18 months old, I was making lunch and he just left. Adrien is also like that, but not nearly as bad and usually only does it when the older two are outside. But with Mitch, he'd wander out any chance he could get when he was a toddler. We had to put locks on all doors at the top, the little latch things, and even then he learned he could just push a chair up to it after a month, but luckily hearing a chair being pushed across the floor is a pretty noticeable sound. But, Mitch has never been diagnosed with any disorder, he was just.....a wanderer. Sorry hun   Not your fault at all, it is something you should not feel terrible about, though I understand the feeling. And, as for windows, they have those little twist lock things you just put on the window, like on the side. They look like this

I am totally in the same boat.

I have chain locks on the tops of all of the doors that lead to the outside. My son will also not hesitate to push the screen out of an open window and go out the window, so I have to either keep my windows closed or rig them so they only open a small amount.

this sucks though because I also have older children who are in and out of the house all the time, so I constantly have to lock and unlock the chain.

We're going through the same thing. DS just learned how yo unlock the window but luckily he's never jumped.

I had a wonderer but she was too young to be able to open the door. I do however have a friend who is a respite worker for parents who have kids with autism.
With the most severe of her kids she has gone so far to put a tracking system in his shoe (he ALWAYS wore shoes when out of bed so she figured that was a safe bet) In some of her more minor situations she had an alarm system installed at the doors and windows, not hooked up to the company but turned on so that if the doors or windows opened that the system would go off and she would be warned.

My daughter is PDD/NOS and she is 10 now. She used to get out my back door when she was a toddler. She never went any further than the back door. Then one early morning around 6 am I had a knock on my door, and heard my neighbor. I got up, opened the door, and in she ran straight to her bed. I went to home depot later that day, and bought chain locks, and eye hooks.

My opinion is to get a deadbolt put at the very top of the door so you know he can't open it and I would do something to keep the windows closed too

see, this is where we are now. He's JUST figured out windows...and now we're back at that "its just a matter of time" situation...so we need to figure out what we are going to do about it. ugh

we had that installed last week on our front door  

we had deadbolts that can only be open and closed with a key, rather than just a normal deadbolt that you flip back and forth. So, those two new style deadbolts are on the side door and basement door. And a deadbolt put on the top front door. So, doors are set. Now its windows. *faceplam*
