sell breast milk?

posted 27th Apr '12
My doctor said that you can sell your breast milk.. He said that it goes for $20-40/oz??

Does anyone know about selling breast milk... Where to do it? How much it truly goes for? etc?

That seems like a gross exaggeration, I was looking around online a few years back and the highest I saw per ounce was like $3, and that was because they wanted it from a certain PP period (to match their baby's development).

People do sell it, yes. But I think it's pretty crappy, just donate it to people in need instead.

As creepy as this is- there is a black market for it because some guys want it for fetishes and stuff. That's the only place where you would get that kind of money for it.

Most milk banks only take donations, and most people that are willing to buy and don't qualify for a milk bank, can't afford to pay that kind of money per ounce. Can you imagine how expensive that would be if you where actually spending that much per ounce to feed you baby?

That's wonderful! I thought about pumping just to donate once my son slows down nursing, which may not be until he's over 2 at this rate.

Please do not judge but I am currently EBF my 8 month old son & I have extra milk that I would like to donate. I heard they test it but what do they test for? I also occasionally smoke pot, would my milk not pass?

donate milk, i wouldn't sell it.. but that is just me. there are regulations for selling it though, tests you have to pass! i'd ask a lc and see if they can help you find a place!

From my understanding they test for everything from alcohol to bacteria to diseases. But I also have heard that the molecules of the pot are too big to pass through the milk- no idea if that's actually true or not...but even if it did pass through I don't think it would stay in your breastmilk for very long so as long as you didn't smoke before you pumped what you were going to donate I think it would be okay.

When we looked into buying BM for DD the prices I got were $2-$4/oz. Luckily we found a donor though
